IPL 2021: Chennai Super Kings appoints Sundar Raman as consultant

The three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) title winners, Chennai Super Kings have appointed former IPL COO Sundar Raman as their consultant. The Madurai-born will take charge of the side ahead of the 14th edition of the tournament.

Raman is currently working as a consultant with the Reliance Industries which owns the IPL franchise of Mumbai Indians. He also held the position of CEO-Sports with the same organisation in the past. He will command the Chennai-based franchise in IPL 2021 alongside CSK’s chief executive officer (CEO) KS Viswanathan.

Addressing the same, the source affirmed Raman’s appointment and said that the 50-year old will look after the commercial and marketing strategies of CSK. However, he added that an official announcement would soon be made in the media.

“Yes, Sundar Raman will come in as a consultant and will handle the commercial and marketing strategies of CSK,” the source told.

Raman’s previous stint in IPL

Sundar Raman has worked earlier as well at the IPL. He commanded the tournament as the COO from its inception in 2008 till 2015. However, amid an investigation into the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, he resigned as the IPL COO in 2015.

Not just IPL, Raman had also earlier worked with former BCCI President and ICC chairman N Srinivasan during the latter’s tenure as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief. The two also worked together during Srinivasan’s term at the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Coming to Chennai Super Kings, the MS Dhoni-led side had a horrible last season where they failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in tournament history. However, they have tried to fix a few broken links this time and would look to come back stronger in IPL 2021. Their maiden game is lined up against Delhi Capitals on April 10 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
