Being one of the greatest in UFC history is difficult, considering how many legendary champions have already set high standards. Islam Makhachev is currently dominating as lightweight champion, but greatness requires more than winning; it demands lasting impact and iconic moments. According to legends like Jon Jones and Nate Diaz, the Dagestani needs to do a lot to catch up.
Jones and Diaz recently joined forces as coaches for Alf, a Russian version of TUF, now filming episodes together in Thailand. In a viral video, both UFC legends shared candid thoughts about current superstars, focusing particularly on Islam Makhachev’s dominance. Although Diaz has long-standing beef with Makhachev’s camp, he surprisingly has his honest opinion on Makhachev’s position among other greats.
He’s like three to four title fights. He’s got a lot of work to do before… Yeah, he just started dealing with the pressure, this kid and… Well, how is this even argued?

The last encounter between Diaz and Makhachev erupted into chaos, ending with a wild bottle-throwing brawl in front of cameras. Despite never capturing a UFC title, Diaz’s unmatched influence, loyal fanbase, and massive pay-per-view draw continue cementing his iconic MMA status. Jones echoed Diaz’s sentiments on Makhachev, acknowledging the fighter’s rising potential and growing dominance within the lightweight division.
He is a little new in the sport still, to be even considered. But he’s got a big future. The longer you’re on top, the more your opponents get to study your footage. People fixate on fighting you instead of their next opponent. It gets harder and harder the longer you stay on top.
Jon Jones continued.

Jones has been at the top for over a decade now, with twelve title defenses, more than anyone in UFC history ever. He fought elite fighters across three different generations and impressively managed to dominate each one with consistency and composure. For Jones, staying at the top was never easy, he faced many tough challenges and close wins involving luck.
On paper, Makhachev is already the most successful lightweight champion with four title defenses, more than the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov. On top of that, his fighting style makes him one of the most complete fighters to ever compete in history. Apart from that, his future plans to move up and become a double champion can definitely boost his resume among the greats.
Former UFC champion previews Islam Makhachev’s welterweight move
Islam Makhachev’s dream of becoming a double champion is finally materializing after the dramatic results of UFC 315 last weekend. Jack Della Maddalena shocked the world by defeating Belal Muhammad and capturing the UFC welterweight title in a thrilling upset. After the fight, Makhachev announced his move to welterweight, officially abandoning plans for a superfight with Ilia Topuria.

Della Maddalena accepted the fight and spoke with UFC CEO Dana White about making it happen in Perth, Australia, soon. The Aussie star wants to defeat the Dagestani champion in front of his home crowd and avenge Alexander Volkanovski’s previous loss. Fellow countryman and former champion Robert Whittaker also shared his opinion on the potential fight.
I’m very curious because I think Islam Makhachev does everything Belal does but better. I guess the million dollar question though, Volk (Alexander) landed shots on Makachev. If Volk can land shots on Makachev and hurt Makhachev, Jack certainly can as well especially cuz he likes fighting from a closer range that also leaves him more susceptible to takedowns. Makhachev’s takedown game is much higher than Belal.

At UFC 315, Muhammad focused mainly on striking. However, when he decided to use his wrestling, it didn’t result in much success. The Palestinian-American was 3 of 9 in takedowns, and couldn’t hold JDM down like he effortlessly did against Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards at UFC 304.
Ultimately, JDM’s slick counters and the ability to get up cost Muhammad the fight. Moreover, one must note that Makhachev rarely makes such mistakes and brings strong submission threats, something ‘Bully B’ is not known for. It’ll be interesting to see how the new welterweight champion defends his title against the reigning pound-for-pound king.
