With the first two race weekends behind us, McLaren sees themselves 8th in the Constructos Championship with just 6 points. All the points for the British outfit have been scored by Lando Norris in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after finishing seventh. Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo secured the team’s first Formula One race win since 2012 and has failed to open his account for the season.

Six points from two Grands Prix is McLaren’s worst start to a championship since 2017. The team are yet to qualify for Q3 and have only crawled their way into Q2 on both race weekend. But the team seems to have found its footing after displaying a satisfactory performance in the FP1 and FP2 of the Australian GP.

After a disappointing start to their 2022 campaign, McLaren showed improved levels of performance on Friday in Melbourne with a pair. And the Briton believes McLaren has taken a “small step forward” after a good performance on Day 1.

Ahead of the first Australian GP in 3 years, Mclaren had worked on their upgrades planned to improve their speed and the results have been imminent. Lando Norris finished in P5 and P8 in FP1 and in FP2 while teammate Daniel Ricciardo secured a P8 and P10. Lando spoke about his team’s improvement in the post-race.

Norris said, “It looked alright. It wasn’t amazing but it was decent. It was probably our best Friday so far, so I’m hoping it will continue tomorrow because we have a good feeling. I think we have made a few changes and we have learned a bit this weekend from the previous two weekends that we have implemented, and it is working reasonably well. It is a small step forward, so it is a good start, and hopefully, we can continue that into tomorrow and make further improvements.”

McLaren has been struggling to find speed on the track. The 2022 MCL36 has looked by far the slowest of the midfield pack compared with the likes of Alpine, AlphaTauri and Alfa Romeo. But the team have put in hours during the Week off and looks like the ‘Papaya’ is back on track.
