World No. 7, Andrey Rublev won his second title of the year in the ATP Dubai Tennis Championship 2022 against Jiří Veselý in straight sets. What was supposed to be a joyous occasion is now overwhelmed by the global crisis between his Homeland Russia, Ukraine, and America. This impacted Ukraine’s citizens very deeply, forcing them to hide underground, having no place to escape to.
The Russian is in great distress regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, leading him to protest publicly. After beating the Polish player Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championship, he took a marker and wrote a message on a camera, saying, “No war please.” His initial act of protest spread like wildfire among viewers, encouraging them to also follow in his footsteps and protest on social media.
Andrey Rublev prays for peace
With things taking a turn to the worse side, on February 27, the Russian took to Twitter and posted,
“Now, It’s not about tennis
It’s not about sport
It’s about having peace all over the world
We need to support each other??”
He thanks Dubai for his fantastic time spent there and for his 9th ATP Title; however, he wished for something even more significant, World Peace and Unity.
During his stay in Dubai, Rublev spoke in an interview regarding the current state of affairs. “In these moments, you realize that my match is not important. It’s not about my match, how it affects me. Because what’s happening is much more terrible,” He continued. “You realize how important it is to have peace in the world and to respect each other no matter what and to be united. We should take care of our earth and of each other. This is the most important thing,” he added to his statement.”
The Czech tennis player Jiří Veselý also wrote a message similar to Russian on a camera showing ‘No War.’ Many fellow players such as Danil Medvedev and Elina Svitolina also joined the Russian in his protest towards this war.
