Jalen Duren Being ‘Underwhelmed’ By Pistons’ Contract Offer Baffles Fans – “Did He See Himself in the Playoffs?”

The Detroit Pistons could not make the most of their stellar regular-season run into the playoffs, and center Jalen Duren was one of the players who felt the most heat.
The team as a whole did not perform well to their standards, and many wondered if they had it in them to take the next step. It also meant that the franchise itself would rethink its strategy heading into the 2026-27 season.
They have retained head coach JB Bickerstaff, and there is no doubt that Cade Cunningham is the franchise cornerstone. But when it comes to other pieces, it seems they are open to changes.
One of the first signs of those changes came about when it was reported that the Pistons were interested in signing Austin Reaves. Ultimately, it did not happen as the Los Angeles Lakers gave the undrafted guard a raise he could not ignore.
Then, they traded away mercurial center Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies to open up some salary cap space. With that, they went ahead and offered the other center, Jalen Duren, an extension. The 22-year-old became a first-time All-Star and earned third-team All-NBA honors. That makes him eligible for a max contract worth up to five years and $287 million.
Sources: Jalen Duren was underwhelmed by Detroit’s initial offer in restricted free agency and is hoping to explore sign-and-trade options when June 30 arrives.

However, it seems the Pistons are not willing to give him that much. After being unable to come to terms, the Pennsylvania native was left, as The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported, ‘underwhelmed’ and is exploring sign-and-trade options.
Fans tear into Jalen Duren’s expectations
The problem basketball fans had with Jalen Duren’s ‘underwhelming’ reaction to a contract offer was that they believed he had not taken into account his playoff performance.
When a player seeks a max contract of nearly $300 million, they are expected to be able to step up when the lights are the brightest. For someone who averaged just 9.8 points in the seven-game second-round playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, fans believe he should not be getting that much money.
That was half of what he produced in the regular season, and fans believe that the former 13th overall pick should rethink his stance. Check out examples of those reactions below.
Did he see himself in the playoffs?

Let a nother team set his value the pistons can match why should the pistons over pay him if nobody else values him more than 39 million dollars a year

Bball Paul Reed outplayed this choker in the play-off and he's making $5 million a year.

If this bum is not happy with an average of $30 million, let him walk!
Don't repeat the Drummond mistake.
The pistons were underwhelmed by duren’s past playoff performance too. Guy reverted to being just a big when it mattered most and is now expecting a payday?

Report: all of Detroit and Michigan were underwhelmed by his atrocity of a playoff run.

Had Jalen Duren performed better than what a role player does, the Pistons may have reached the Conference Finals. Sure, the New York Knicks may have swept them, too, but at least the East’s best regular-season team may not have faced the trolls they did.
Pistons do not want to trade Jalen Duren
While Jalen Duren might believe that he is worth the max, or at least close to it, his team does not. Now that he wants to see if other teams agree with him, the Detroit Pistons are hoping they do enough to keep him.

Detroit Pistons are conveying that Jalen Duren will not be moved and are solely focused on coming to terms on an agreement to keep their All-Star center, league sources tell me.

It is hard to find big-bodied centers with the physical abilities the Memphis Tigers alum has. Teams are willing to sell the farm to get someone as skilled as him, which may be why the Pistons do not want to see him go.

Now that they just traded away Isaiah Stewart, it would be wise for the franchise to keep hold of Duren and push him to develop into a superstar. Only then can they think of contending for the title in the future.
