19-year-old Jannik Sinner bid adieu to the 2020 season in extreme fashion. The Italian lifted his maiden ATP title at Sofia Open yesterday. He downed Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3).

After doing so, Sinner became the first player born in 2001 to lift a title on the men’s tour. Moreover, the youngster became the 12th teenager to win an ATP title since 2005.

Sinner was unseeded and not the favourite to win in Bulgaria as the line-up was stacked up with players like Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Further, with his win over Pospisil in the final, Sinner became the youngest Italian in the Open Era to reach an ATP tour championship match.

Jannik dropped only 2 sets en route to his first ATP title. His clash against the seasoned player Pospisil proved to be a thriller for the spectators. None of the duo left any room for error in the deciding set.

However, Sinner edged past his adversary. He put on display his tough mentality and didn’t succumb to the pressure.

Sinner outshined the 30-year-old and etched his name in history after doing so. Plus, he became the youngest ATP champion since Kei Nishikori in 2008. He has already broken through in the Grand Slams this year.

With his quarter-final appearance in Roland Garros, Sinner also became the youngest player to have done so one debut since Rafael Nadal. One can continue to expect great things from Sinner in the coming years.
