Jerry Jones delivered a witty and yet significant statement after the Dallas Cowboys picked up their first win of the 2026 NFL season. The Cowboys defeated rivals, the Washington Commanders in Week 2.

The Cowboys’ opening-day defeat generated ample trash talk around the league. Some of it was warranted. The revamped defense under new coordinator Christian Parker looked clueless and downright lethargic.

Dak Prescott and co. put up 20 points, but wasn’t efficient enough. Meanwhile, the Commanders suffered a narrow loss in Philly. So they were out for blood too.

But it’s never easy to overpower the Cowboys in Dallas, especially with Dak Prescott at quarterback. According to Pro Football Focus, Prescott had never lost to the Commanders at Arlington. Prescott kept that streak intact with a 37-20 victory on Sunday night.

After the final whistle, Cowboys veteran owner Jerry Jones walked up to the reporters and delivered a line that was clearly pre-prepared.

There is nothing more dangerous than an old man with money. That is my quote for the day.

It’s a peculiar way to open a presser. Jones has been known to use outlandish analogies, but this statement carries significant weight.

Over the years, Jones has received flak for not investing in the Cowboys to win championships. The 30-year wait for a Super Bowl makes the case even more compelling.

2026 offseason looked different. Jones actively made notable changes, which impressed even the most cynical of fans. Jones even declared that he’s ready to give up top draft picks to strengthen the team further.

I’d give up the future to substitute where we are today — as to a player — to give you an idea about what I’d invest, something substantive, to get the right kind of deal and improve us for Opening Day — I would.

But why the sudden urgency to win a championship? Well, the answer lies in his age. The senior Jones is 83 and soon will have to announce a successor, even though he has no intention of handing over control to someone else.

The opening-day defeat to the New York Giants dented his aspiration. Jones admitted that the Giants played at a higher level than the star, which hasn’t happened much in the Prescott era.

Fortunately, the Cowboys blocked out the outside noise and got the job done against the Commanders. Prescott threw for 279 yards and 4 touchdowns. CeeDee Lamb caught 8 passes for 153 yards and scored 2 touchdowns.

Jerry Jones should be worried about the defense

The Cowboys won, but it was once again a lopsided performance. The defense had a disappointing outing. To put it bluntly, if the offense hadn’t outscored Washington, Dallas would be 0-2 heading into next week’s game.

The Cowboys’ pass rush had a horrible day. No sack was recorded. DeMarvion Overshown and Malik Hooker did not feature due to injury. And to make matters worse, Jaishawn Barham, Dee Winters, Cobie Durant and PJ Locke all exited at various points in the game.

Rookie Barham was the only bright patch. The former Michigan star had seven tackles, one forced fumble, and an untimely bowel movement before leaving the field.

The Cowboys need to regroup and tighten their defense because the games will only get tougher from here on out. Next week, they face off against the Baltimore Ravens, who suffered a shock defeat to the New Orleans Saints earlier in the day.
