Since drafting Patrick Surtain II in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos’ defensive game has improved significantly. That’s why the front office didn’t hesitate even a little while offering their cornerstone a record-breaking extension just a day prior to the 2024 season opener.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the Broncos have locked in Surtain II for four years by signing a lucrative extension worth $96 million including guaranteed money of $77.5 million– making him the highest-paid defensive back in the history of the NFL. Since this new deal expands the market significantly, Surtain II has created his fellow defensive backs to broaden the horizon even more.

Upon hearing about his fellow cornerback’s achievement, the New York Jets’ star Sauce Gardner gave a succinct yet enthusiastic reaction by retweeting Rapoport’s social media post about Surtain II’s extension.

My dawg got that baggg,” wrote Gardner, along with five dollar signs for eyes reflecting his excitement for the deal.

It’s certainly not a surprise to see such an enthusiastic reaction from the star cornerback, given that he is widely considered the best player in the league. While he continues playing on his rookie deal, he likes the market expansion as it sets a higher standard for him when his turn comes.

Sauce Gardner’s sarcastic take on contract extensions

Until his contract negotiations begin with the Jets, Gardner has been celebrating his fellow defensive players for signing an extension with their respective teams. Interestingly, his teammate Michael Carter II also earned his extension from the Jets recently by signing a three-year deal worth $30.75 million including a guaranteed $19 million.

Be honest... how does it feel to wake up after getting paid that bag? Asking for a friend.
Sauce Gardner wrote on X, sarcastically suggesting he wants to experience the same feeling

With the NFL 2024 season starting on Thursday, it’s unlikely that the Jets would begin contract negotiations with Gardner now as they wouldn’t want any distraction during the regular season, especially after having so much at stake.

Although it’s only been two years since the star cornerback joined the force in New York, he has proved himself exceptionally after making two consecutive Pro Bowl selections and earning the Defensive Player of the Year honor in his rookie year, in 2022. Having said that, the anticipated number for Gardner’s extension certainly falls above the mark of $100 million, since the market already expanded at $92 million this Wednesday.
