F1 pundit asks Lewis Hamilton to ditch Mercedes for Ferrari to win an eighth world title
Lewis Hamilton is struggling at Mercedes, and speculation suggests a potential move to Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton and Johnny Herbert
Lewis Hamilton’s career at Mercedes is one littered with glory and victory. This partnership dominated the majority of the turbo-hybrid era, winning everything there is to win. However, all good things must end, and here it is no different.
Mercedes have struggled ever since the introduction of new regulation changes in 2022 and cannot compete with the likes of Red Bull. Hamilton, in particular, has consistently complained about both the W13 and W14 challengers. He has not won a race in over 500 days with Mercedes. This concerns a driver approaching the end of his career but still seeking his eighth world championship.
Amid this torrid period with the Silver Arrows, former driver turned pundit Johnny Herbert has suggested a possible solution for Hamilton. He said, “The red car makes the most sense. The motivation for the 8th is still there. But it has to have the right ingredients – like he did when he went from McLaren to Mercedes when a number of people, including myself, thought he was mad to do it. “
He added, “What Niki Lauda and Ross Brawn were able to present to him[about Mercedes] excited him. That’s why he went. Ferrari have got to do a similarly big selling job.” Despite Mercedes insisting their priority is to put pen to paper with the Englishman as soon as possible, these rumors of a move to the Scuderia seem to be growing more intense.
Lewis Hamilton is past his prime but still possesses a hunger for victory
The veteran’s career in F1 speaks for itself. He has crossed the line in the first a record 103 times. He possesses just as many pole positions, too. Hamilton has stepped on the podium a record-breaking 192 times. As a result, he has accumulated 4461.5 career points, not to mention his seven world titles.
Hamilton won the World Drivers’ Championship six times in seven years, between 2014 and 2020. This level of domination is unprecedented in F1, not even matched by the likes of all-time great Michael Schumacher. Despite a career as illustrious as this, the veteran currently struggles.
Since being denied his eighth title by Max Verstappen in 2021, things have worsened for him progressively. He has not registered a single race win in over 500 days, which is astounding given his hunger for victory. 2022 marked the first season of his career, where he failed to win a race.
However, despite his substandard machinery over the ongoing and last seasons, he has pushed the car beyond its capability and has stood on the podium numerous times. The most recent Miami GP was a great indicator of his ability to make a strong comeback, as he made up seven places in the race after a dismal qualifying.
He may be a shadow of his former self, but there is no loss of passion or perseverance from his side, as he always looks optimistic and has full faith in the team to deliver results. His future is currently clouded with doubt amid rumors of a move to Ferrari or even retirement. However, he displays the qualities that made him a world champion every weekend, and he can undoubtedly do it again with the right car beneath him and the team behind him.
