Currently, a potential fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall is often discussed as one of the most exciting possibilities. However, due to the heavyweight champion’s continual refusal to engage in this matchup, it has not yet materialized. Recently, one of Jones’ arch-rivals, Daniel Cormier, commented on an intriguing theory behind the champion’s constant avoidance of Aspinall.

Jon Jones recently staged his first title defense fight at UFC 309. In a highly anticipated return, the UFC heavyweight champion defeated Stipe Miocic by TKO. Soon, discussions about a potential title unification fight between Jones and interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall have reignited. In one of his YouTube videos, Daniel Cormier shared his thoughts on this exciting potential matchup.

I don’t even know if there’s ever been a time in his career where someone has been favored to beat Jon Jones and I think that concerns him… That to Jones raises some questions right because for as many fights as he’s had he’s always been thought to be the better guy. This guy, Tom Aspinall is the first time that someone says, ‘There is something in him that will open a line where Jon Jones is not is not the better guy out there.’

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Cormier has discussed this intriguing matchup as an analyst. According to the UFC Hall of Famer, Aspinall poses a threat to Jones’ status as the GOAT. Even several other UFC legends stated that the British fighter could have an advantage over ‘Bones.’ However, unlike a majority of them, Cormier supported Jones’ strategic plan to avoid a challenging matchup like Aspinall.

Interestingly, Jones and Cormier have never been known for having a good relationship. Over the years, the UFC community has witnessed their heated rivalry. Cormier is well aware of Jones’ exceptional skills as a fighter and recently stated that the heavyweight champion isn’t afraid to face Aspinall. Additionally, another prominent figure in the UFC community recently discussed this intriguing matchup.

Julianna Pena is hopeful to witness Jon Jones fighting Tom Aspinall soon

Tom Aspinall currently holds the interim UFC heavyweight title. Remarkably, the British fighter has ascended through the ranks of the UFC heavyweight division in a short period. During his four years in the promotion, Aspinall has achieved an impressive record of 8 wins and just 1 loss. As a result, the British fighter believes he is a worthy challenger for Jon Jones’ heavyweight crown.

For the past few months, Aspinall has persistently challenged Jones for a title unification bout. However, the heavyweight champion feels that a fight against the interim champion would not be advantageous for him. Despite this, Aspinall is determined to secure his title shot against Jones. Recently, Julianna Pena, the women’s bantamweight champion, shared her thoughts on the antics of the interim champion.

When I saw Jon Jones fighting and (Aspinall) was like watching and everything like that all intently, I was like he’s doing all the right things. He’s saying all the right things. As a fighter like Jon Jones, who has done so much in the sport, I feel like, especially with him saying that he’s not done, he’s not retiring… He’s one of those guys who is not going to ride off into the sunset, if you will, knowing that there’s other meat on the table that he still hasn’t finished.
