Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall for the undisputed UFC heavyweight title has remained in discussion for months. So far, no date is confirmed yet. Jones’s delays and high financial demands have complicated negotiations, as his desired purse doesn’t align with the UFC’s offer. However, a new opportunity has emerged for Jones to secure the payday he wants, potentially reshaping the situation.

Reports suggested that Jon Jones demanded $30 million to fight Tom Aspinall, a sum some supported while others disagreed with. Meanwhile, PFL boss Donn Davis is prepared to offer Jones the payday he seeks, presenting him with a new challenge. While the prize money is bigger, the opponent is someone dangerous that ‘Bones’ already know.

I know one way ⁦@JonnyBones⁩ earns $50m … ⁦@francis_ngannou⁩. To decide the true MMA Heavyweight Champion and the real P4P #1. That would be THE fight of the decade for MMA fans! #PFLMMA #UFC

Jones and Francis Ngannou have a long-standing rivalry, with fans eager to see them clash in a massive heavyweight showdown. Negotiations between Jones and Ngannou fell apart due to financial disagreements, and the departure of Ngannou from the UFC. Now, with the Cameroonian-French becoming the PFL champion, Davis’ plans make more sense.

Davis has often talked about PFL being the top competitor of UFC, leading to his rivalry with CEO Dana White. Davis has aggressively pursued UFC talent, offering lucrative deals, which has intensified tensions between the promotions. White, however, dismisses PFL’s impact, evident from their recent struggles. Given the circumstances, a fight like this seems unlikely.

Jon Jones gets accused of lying to his fans

Last year, Jon Jones was focused on his legacy fight with heavyweight GOAT Stipe Miocic, which took place at UFC 309. Jones won the fight via TKO, but many fans were not satisfied watching him beat a 42-year-old first responder. On the other hand, it was Tom Aspinall who deserved the position and fans are eager for that match-up.

From making public call outs to extensive trolling, Aspinall has done everything in his hands to get the title shot. However, nothing seems to work out which has now frustrated the British champion. In a recent podcast, Aspinall mocked Jones and accused him of conning his fans.

I think the fact that he didn’t want to fight Ngannou for three years and now he doesn’t want to fight me over a year and he just the way he manipulates the media and the public is super smart. I don’t want to take anything away from him. But do I think he’s scared to take the tough fights at this stage in his career? Absolutely.

Aspinall has now held the UFC interim championship for more than 500 days and wasted his prime years. As expected, fans are blaming UFC and Dana White for this, and the CEO still doesn’t have an official date. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see how this whole situation finally gets resolved.

Is Jon Jones ruining his legacy?

Jon Jones is arguably the greatest MMA fighter ever, dominating his opponents with elite skills and an unmatched fight IQ. He is the youngest ever UFC champion and has the most number of title defenses in the promotion’s history. He is often mentioned by many experts and fans in their all time GOAT list.

Jones is extremely proud of his legacy and first likes being questioned by fans. He has often shown insecurity, for example the incident involving Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2021. Now, on his last stint as a professional fighter, ‘Bones’ is even more cautious about his legacy.

However, controversies, suspensions, and inactivity have clouded his legacy. While his achievements remain historic, his reluctance to face new contenders has raised questions about how he will ultimately be remembered.
