When The Shield‘s music hit at WrestleMania 40, fans momentarily lost their minds. The Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns main event had already gone through so much that the WWE Universe believed that for one night, Jon Moxley, fka Dean Ambrose, would show up. However, it turned out that it was a ploy from Seth Rollins to help The American Nightmare “finish the story.” Recently, Mox commented on what had transpired on that eventful night.
While speaking with Sports Illustrated, the Ace of AEW revealed that he was asleep in Japan while the match was taking place. Furthermore, he disclosed that he received messages related to The Shield’s entrance at WrestleMania. However, Moxley was completely unaware of what happened when he woke up. He jokingly asserted that it would have been cool to reunite with his brothers for the night.
For those unfamiliar, the new IWGP World Champion was in Japan preparing for a tag team match. Prior to winning the title, he teamed up with Shota Umino to take on Jack Perry and Ren Narita. Last night on Dynamite, Jon Moxley emerged successful in his first title defense by defeating Powerhouse Hobbs. As for his Shield brothers, the duo is currently on hiatus from WWE.
I was asleep in Japan when that was going on, when I woke up, I had these messages saying ‘I thought you were coming out!’. And I was like ‘coming out where?’ — It’s cool that people thought it was me. But I was asleep.Jon Moxley on the WrestleMania 40 main event
Seth Rollins recently underwent surgery for a torn meniscus and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, fans expect Roman Reigns to be taking a lengthy break from television following his loss to Rhodes. Interestingly, The Tribal Chief was spotted filming for an upcoming Hollywood project a few days ago.
Jon Moxley spoke candidly about The Shield’s rise in the wrestling industry
On February 29, 2020, Jon Moxley became the new AEW World Champion at Revolution. From there on, began a four-year streak where there was at least one Shield member who held the title every day. The impressive milestone ended at WrestleMania when both Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins lost their respective world titles.
As such, Mox heaped praise on his former teammates and spoke about their success. In the aforementioned interview, the IWGP World Champion claimed that the faction had fulfilled their promise of taking over the industry. He reflected on the journey of the three members becoming the top stars after being “absolute nobodies.”
Without a doubt, The Shield’s main roster debuts and eventual single runs set the bar high for other talent who jumped ship. To this day, Reigns, Rollins, and Moxley continue to reign supreme on their respective brands on the eve of the ten-year anniversary of the breakup of The Shield. Needless to say, this dominance will continue to live on for the coming years as well.
