The Atlanta Falcons’ defense forced two fumbles and two turnovers from Josh Allen in a dramatic Monday Night clash of Week 6. It could have easily been more.

Allen and the Buffalo Bills stepped into the Mercedes-Benz Stadium as the favorites to secure the fifth win of the year. Recent history was in the Bills’ favor, as they had won the last two meetings, including a victory in Atlanta.

After just two minutes, the recency bias began to fade. Running back Tyler Allgeier rushed for 21 yards and gave the Falcons the lead. Allen took nearly five minutes to answer with a tight pass to his tight end, Dawson Knox, for a 19-yard touchdown.

Second-year Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. regained the lead through his telepathic connection with wide receiver Drake London seconds before the end of the first quarter. London’s 9-yard touchdown increased the gap even further.

Falcons leading back Bijan Robinson, who had over 260 yards on 50 carries and 1 touchdown in the last three games, scored an 82-yard touchdown to send the Bills’ dugout into shock. They never managed to recover. In fact, the offense deteriorated over time.

Allen threw a pick to Dee Alford, who shadowed Khalil Shair throughout the night. He also coughed up the ball on a Falcons blitz. The ball went out of bounds to save the Bills from any impending doom.

The reigning NFL MVP made a similar mistake when the scores were 7-21 in the fourth quarter. While under duress, Allen tried to run the ball but fumbled it. Fortunately, Elijah Moore scooped the ball up to keep the drive alive and gained valuable yards.

A minute later, Bills backup running back Ray Davis scored a 16-yard receiving touchdown to make it a one-score game.

Parker Romo increased Atlanta’s lead by three after the Bills wasted a drive and had to punt the ball away.

However, the most telling moment of the tie came seconds before the end. Allen’s attempted pass looped up in the air after taking a massive deflection from a Falcons defender. Linebacker DeAngelo Malone was on hand to catch the loose ball and take a knee. The game ended in a 14-24 win for the Falcons.

The Bills were top of not just the AFC East but also the conference after starting the season 4-0 with wins against the Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and the Miami Dolphins. In week five, they faced the New England Patriots, who exposed the Bills’ offense by limiting them to just 10 offensive points.

Allen threw his second interception of the campaign and conceded a turnover (the first of the year).

We just played sloppy. Not gonna win a football game turning the ball over three times in our red zone. Gave them one in their red zone. That’s just bad, bad football. We just did not play good tonight. We shouldn’t even have been in it with three turnovers. That’s just piss poor offense.

Josh Allen said after the game

Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, who was on the Jets coaching team in the last few years, claimed he had sleepless nights preparing a game plan to contain Allen.

We’re going to have to play our best football. It’s going to be, like I told the guys this morning, we’ve got to earn the right to win this game. And that means this week, it’s got to be championship-level prep, as it always is, but we’ve got to go to another space.

Jeff Ulbrich had said (H/T: Sports Illustrated)

Ulbrich’s game plan worked as Allen finished with just 180 yards through the air and 42 on the ground for 2 TDs and 2 interceptions.

Despite the two straight defeats, Allen is still a frontrunner in the MVP race. His tally stands at 122 completions for 1397 yards (68.5% completion) for 14 overall touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

The Bills go into a bye week to prepare for a tough stretch of football. Three of the next five games include teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
