Josh Allen engineered 5 touchdowns and a ten-point victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. With the win, the Buffalo Bills quarterback increased his chances of winning his second MVP award.
After the game, Richard Sherman made a surprising revelation about Allen. The retired Super Bowl-winning DB revealed Allen had been feeling ill leading up to kickoff.
With Allen and Dion Dawkins next to him at the Prime Video post-game show, Sherman said that Allen needed an IV and was “shivering in a hot tub” right before taking the field for Highmark Stadium’s inaugural regular-season game.
Allen did not confirm or deny Sherman’s report. Bills head coach, on the other hand, may have dropped a subtle hint to Allen’s pre-game illness.
You watch how [Josh Allen] plays, and it’s like, how does everyone else not feel like they need to empty it out. Because he literally gave everything he had out there. He put the team on his back in a lot of those situations.
Bills head coach Joe Brady said
Allen started Week 2 with a rushing touchdown in the first quarter. He threw consecutive touchdown passes to Joshua Palmer, Dawson Knox, and Dalton Kincaid before adding a second rushing score in the third quarter. The All-Pro signal caller set up running back James Cook for his first with just under three minutes until the final whistle.

The Lions reduced the deficit but couldn’t catch up with the Bills. The AFC franchise won 41-31 and improved to 2-0. Allen threw 20 completions for 248 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, rushed 14 times for 69 yards, and scored 2 touchdowns. Cook gained 135 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries.
With the win, Allen is now the favorite to win the league MVP. He last won the best player award two years ago, edging out Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Josh Allen is fast approaching another NFL record
Allen is widely considered one of the best quarterbacks of his generation alongside Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow. But unlike the other three, Allen was a complete unknown in college. He was plagued by accuracy issues throughout his entire college career at Wyoming.

Then again, he has thrived in using his feet. Allen wasn’t viewed as a dual-threat quarterback like Jackson. But he has gradually grown into that role. Allen has scored more rushing touchdowns than any quarterback since his NFL debut in 2018. In fact, he surpassed legendary Cam Newton in career rushing touchdowns.
Two on Thursday night increased Allen’s overall tally to 83 touchdowns. According to Will Brinson of CBS Sports, Allen is just 17 touchdowns behind Lions icon and Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders.
Josh Allen is 17 rushing touchdowns away from passing Barry Sanders (10th all time) and tying Shaun Alexander and Marshall Faulk (t9).
Brinson tweeted
Sanders retired with 99 rushing touchdowns. Both Shaun Alexander and Marshal Faulk have 100 apiece.

He's probably going to finish top five all time in rushing touchdowns. As a quarterback. Insane.
The Bills drafted Allen seventh overall in 2018. Since then, he has made 130 appearances for the Bills in the regular season. He has thrown 2655 completions for 30,684 yards, 225 touchdowns, and 94 interceptions. He has rushed 891 times for 4813 yards and scored 83 touchdowns. Allen has a 90-39 regular-season record, including seven winning campaigns.
However, he has struggled to emulate the same success in the playoffs. Despite boasting a winning 8-7 record, Allen has yet to win a conference championship or play in the Super Bowl.
In Week 3, Allen and the Bills host the Los Angeles Chargers. Allen is 2-1 against the Chargers. He has a passer rating of 82.2 with 639 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.
