Carlos Alcaraz has established himself as one of the best players of his generation. The Spaniard and Jannik Sinner dominated the men’s circuit last year, but Sinner was more consistent than the 21-year-old. Ahead of the Australian Open, the youngster and his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, had a rather pretty good pre-season.
Alcaraz had one of the best summers of his career in 2024, winning two Grand Slam titles. He first won the French Open title after defeating Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner. At Wimbledon, he produced another excellent display defending the title. He also claimed the Olympic silver medal in Paris after losing in the final to Novak Djokovic.
However, he failed to continue with the form in the second half of the season, as he was largely inconsistent with his performance on the court. Also, he won just one title in six tournaments before the season ended. Juan Carlos Ferrero said during an exhibition match before the 2025 Australian Open that he has worked with the Spaniard on aspects of his game that he needs to improve.
Alcaraz didn’t feature in any warm-up tournament ahead of the Australian Open as his manner has been. Indeed, it has not been an issue for him as last season he reached the quarter-finals of the event. But, this time around it’s almost a must-win for the 21-year-old as he aims to become the youngest male player to achieve a Career Slam.
Carlos Alcaraz makes hilarious comment about getting engaged this year
Carlos Alcaraz took part in a charity match at the Rod Laver Arena ahead of the Australian Open. The Spaniard lost to Alex de Minaur 5-7, 6-4, 5-10 in a little over two hours of primed tennis. Both players showcased how much they have improved this season as they hope to win silverware.
However, during their on-court interview, Alcaraz was asked when he would finally get engaged as De Minaur got engaged to WTA star Katie Boulter during the off-season and several players also. The Spaniard hilariously revealed that he thought he was going to get engaged last year, but now was hopeful about this year.

*crowd goes wild*
Alex: “Ayyyyyyeee…”
Carlos: “Who knows this year ? no engagement so far. I laughed with some close people that during the break, 3 or 4 players… pic.twitter.com/FnZEejZjQN
Despite Alcaraz’s loss to De Minaur, he showed signs of improvement in his serves. Perhaps, he can work on it better before the Australian Open starts on January 12. Besides that, Alcaraz will know his first-round opponent on Thursday (January 9) when the tournament draw is done.
