Jude Bellingham has played down his on field exchange with Lionel Messi during England’s 2-1 loss to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, saying there was nothing bad at all, despite the incident becoming one of the most talked about moments from the match.

The confrontation took place during the second half of the semifinal as Bellingham and Messi exchanged words following a challenge. Television cameras also captured Messi appearing frustrated before making a sarcastic facial expression in Bellingham’s direction, prompting widespread discussion among fans on social media.

Many viewed the sequence as one of the defining moments of England’s defeat as Argentina completed its comeback to reach another World Cup final. Bellingham, however, dismissed suggestions that there was any personal issue between the two players.

Speaking after the match, the England midfielder said the exchange was simply part of a competitive World Cup semifinal and stressed that he had great respect for the Argentina captain.

There were zero problems with Messi. We were talking about a frictional shot, actually, there was nothing bad at all. I’m sure everyone will do their job and blow it out of proportion, but for me there was nothing. For me was a privilege to face Leo.
