Justin Gaethje will have the chance to be the first fighter to defend the BMF title at UFC 300. On the other hand, Max Holloway will have the chance to be the first fighter to hold interim, undisputed, and BMF UFC titles. Gaethje is coming off two impressive performances after a setback against Charles Oliveira.
Justin Gaethje’s previous fights were against Dustin Poirier and Rafael Fiziev. Gaethje was the underdog in both fights but won nonetheless. He even head-kick knocked out Poirer in the BMF title fight at UFC 291 after an impressive showing against Fiziev at UFC 286. Now, Gaethje revealed a shocking reason for losing the title fight against Charles Oliveira at UFC 274.
Eighteen days before, I smoked my head off the concrete, but I was so ready and so willing. You know, the fight was at home, and I've never pulled out of a fight. I didn't even think about for a second to pull out of the fight. But that's why those strikes were so effective. I also got caught up in the momentJustin Gaethje via Pound 4 Pound Podcast
Oliveira dropped Gaethje at UFC 274 and submitted him via rear naked choke. After the fight, Gaethje even stated that Oliveira was the hardest puncher in the division. However, he has retracted the statement. Even though Gaethje is 0-2 in title fights, he is not out of title contention. If victorious at UFC 300, he might not have to fight again before a title fight.
Islam Makhachev wants to fight in June. However, Gaethje does not want to fight in June as he wants to rest and have a full training camp. Therefore, Makhachev might fight Poirier in June. Nonetheless, the winner of Charles Oliveira vs. Arman Tsarukyan will also have a say in the matter.
Justin Gaethje speaks on Charles Oliveira’s opponent at UFC 300
Justin Gaethje competes in the featured fight on the main card of UFC 300 PPV. Before his fight, Charles Oliveira, the last fighter to defeat him, would have fought in a number one contender fight against Arman Tsarukyan.
Gaethje has studied his potential opponents in the division but has not extensively studied Tsarukyan. Nonetheless, he gave out his take on Tsarukyan days before UFC 300.
Very similar to [Alexander] Volkanovski, I think those guys are very difficult to control on the ground. Take downs, you know, they're like bowling balls. I think he's a tough match up for anybody. And, you know, obviously, again, control range, control his feet, but yeah, he's a tough match up for anybody.Justin Gaethje via Pound 4 Pound Podcast
The title picture will become clear after the event with Gaethje, Holloway, Oliveira, and Tsarukyan all in action at UFC 300. As Gaethje has ruled out a June return, Oliveira or Tsarukyan must win their fight unscathed and without any damage. Otherwise, the UFC will likely book a fight between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier for June.
