In Short
  • Justin Jefferson believes Kyler Murray's arrival will pressure JJ McCarthy to improve.
  • The Vikings drafted McCarthy 10th overall, but he missed his rookie year due to injury.
  • Analysts suggest the Vikings should trade McCarthy to avoid a situation similar to Anthony Richardson and Zach Wilson.

The time for dwelling on JJ McCarthy‘s past mistakes is over. The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray to fix the problems with their offense, and it’s clear who holds the upper hand for the QB1 job.

Murray’s spell in Arizona wasn’t great, but no one can deny that the former Heisman Trophy winner possesses a ton of talent. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson thinks that McCarthy will be on his toes with Murray around in the locker room, but he can also learn a lot from the experienced signal caller.

The Vikings drafted McCarthy 10th overall in 2024 to make him the franchise quarterback. McCarthy missed his entire rookie year through injury. Despite that, head coach Kevin O’Connell handed the University of Michigan alum the starting quarterback job in year two.

Even more injuries, lackluster plays, and poor communication with his receivers forced the Vikings to use their backups. Jefferson’s production plummeted. Sure, he registered 1000 yards, but a year earlier, he had 1500+ yards and 10 touchdowns on 103 receptions.

The All-Pro wideout’s numbers are expected to shoot up in 2026 if Murray starts for the Vikings from day one. That being said, Jefferson isn’t completely giving up on McCarthy yet. He actually thinks that Murray’s presence will only help McCarthy become a better player.

For JJ [McCarthy], for somebody [Kyler Murray] to enter that room with that type of ability, that type of talent, he’s [McCarthy] got to step it up a little bit. So, it’s good for him to feel that type of pressure and to really lock in a little bit and say, ‘It’s either now or I’m going to take that backseat again. It’s all a competitive mindset when it comes to these type[s] of things. So, it’s all about who’s ready for that moment and who’s ready to step up and take that initiative.

Analyst urges the Vikings to trade JJ McCarthy

The Vikings own nine picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, scheduled to start on April 23 in Pittsburgh. The NFC North side can acquire one or maybe even two draft picks if they trade McCarthy.

Minnesota has four total quarterbacks on its roster. Aside from Murray and McCarthy, the Vikings re-signed veteran Carson Wentz and have undrafted QB Max Brosmer. From the outside, it looks like O’Connell might choose the better quarterback to start in week one of the offseason. But after hearing what Jefferson said, it seems like O’Connell doesn’t want Murray and McCarthy to compete for the starting quarterback job.

So the best course of action, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, is to trade the former CFP champion during the current window and acquire high draft picks. Otherwise, the Vikings risk pushing the 23-year-old into a similar situation to Anthony Richardson and Zach Wilson.

This [JJ McCarthy situation] is going to become an Anthony Richardson [the Colts]/Zach Wilson [the Jets] scenario quickly, where there is just no value to be had from a former high draft pick. And something to keep in mind about whether McCarthy is even tradable: Malik Willis’ starting career looked like it was torched after his first two years with the Tennessee Titans, but he landed in the right place in Green Bay and turned it around. McCarthy needs that kind of new start.

Robinson wrote

In two years with the Vikings, McCarthy has racked up 140 completions from 243 passing attempts (57.6%) for 1632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 picks. He also rushed 37 times for 181 yards and scored 4 touchdowns.

At college, McCarthy went 27-1 with the Wolverines in three years. He completed 482 passes from 713 attempts for 6226 yards, 49 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. With his feet, he added 632 yards on 161 carries and scored 10 touchdowns.
