The Minnesota Vikings enter the 2025 offseason with a major decision at quarterback. After a strong season from veteran Sam Darnold, the team must determine whether to re-sign him or move forward with J.J. McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick.
McCarthy was drafted 10th overall in 2024 with hopes he could be the team’s future leader under center. However, a knee injury sidelined him for the entire season, preventing him from making his debut. In his absence, Darnold stepped in and delivered the best season of his career, throwing for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl selection.
Darnold’s performance has made him a viable option for the Vikings moving forward. However, with McCarthy expected to be healthy for the 2025 season, Minnesota faces a decision on whether to commit to the veteran or transition to their young quarterback. The team’s approach in free agency and training camp will determine who takes the field in Week 1.
McCarthy has already made a strong impression on teammates despite not playing a snap. Speaking to Athlon Sports, Jefferson praised the young quarterback’s dedication.
I definitely can say he’s a sponge, for sure. He’s a guy that wants to learn. He’s a guy that wants to be a top-tier quarterback in this league.

So, our lockers are really right next to each other. So, every single day we’re chopping it up. We’re talking not only about football, but just life in general.

Justin Jefferson is confident in Minnesota Vikings and Kevin O’Connell’s long term vision
The Minnesota Vikings’ biggest offseason news so far has been the extension of head coach Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell has been able to show success in his short period including the recent 14 win season.

In an exclusive interview with PFSN during a USAA event in New Orleans, Justin Jefferson praised Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell for his leadership and connection with players.
I mean, him as a person is something that’s very special, you know, him to be a coach that is just so laid back and just so cool. He’s definitely a player-friendly coach, and I’m just so grateful to be around him. Being with him for three years now, it’s something special, man. Just the way he comes to work, the way he interacts with his guys, the connection that he has throughout the entire year, I couldn’t say any bad things about him.
