Justin Trudeau made it clear that attending a United States World Cup match with girlfriend Katy Perry did not alter his allegiance when it comes to international soccer.
The former Canadian prime minister was in attendance for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles on June 12, where the United States kicked off its campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Perry was part of the pregame festivities, performing her song “Wonder” during the tournament’s opening ceremony.
The appearance drew attention because both Canada and the United States began their World Cup journeys on the same day. On Saturday, June 13, The New York Times highlighted Trudeau’s presence at the Team USA match in a post on X.
“From @TheAthleticFC: On a day that Canada and the United States both opened their campaigns at the World Cup, Justin Trudeau opted to watch Team USA,” the newspaper wrote on X. “His girlfriend, Katy Perry, was performing in the opening ceremony.”
Trudeau later reposted the message and offered a lighthearted explanation for his decision to attend. “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call,” he wrote.
While he joined Perry for the opening festivities and watched the American victory, Trudeau was quick to remind followers where his true sporting loyalties remain. In a separate post on X, he reaffirmed his support for Canada’s World Cup bid. “You know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup,” alongside a Canadian flag emoji.

The appearance marked another high-profile outing for the couple, who have frequently been seen together at public events over the past year.
