Karolina Muchova leaves the All England Club disappointed after losing to Linda Noskova in the Wimbledon final. In her second Grand Slam final, the Czech star was the favorite to win, but failed to deliver her best display on Center Court on Saturday (July 11), allowing her compatriot Noskova to win the championship.

Muchova had defeated Noskova in their first tour-level meeting at the US Open last year and had overcome two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff in three sets in the Wimbledon semi-finals. The 29-year-old had also won 10 consecutive grass-court matches ahead of the final against Noskova.

Nonetheless, one reason for Muchova’s loss to Noskova was that she looked nervous. The 2023 French Open runner-up failed to dominate the crucial opening exchanges, allowing 21-year-old Noskova to take control of the match. Noskova settled the first set in just 31 minutes, winning 6-2.

Noskova continued with the momentum, forcing Muchova to make uncharacteristic mistakes. The ninth seed played with pace and depth from her baseline to draw mistakes from Muchova, while carefully picking her moments to go for thumping winners. However, Muchova reacted while down 2-5 to win 7-5, forcing a deciding set.

However, Noskova recovered from missing five championship points to beat Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, becoming the third Czech star in the past four years to win the women’s singles of the Wimbledon Championships. Frustrated Muchova admitted during her media interview that she will take the positives from the loss:

It will take me a few days to get over this defeat because right now, I’m very sad and disappointed. Nonetheless, playing the final remains a great achievement. I feel that my tennis is improving, and I am becoming a better player. Winning a Grand Slam is still one of my big dreams. Today is a setback, but also a motivation to keep working and try again.

Muchova has won two titles this season already. She claimed the Qatar Open earlier this year after beating Canadian sensation Victoria Mboko in the final. The tenth seed then led Naomi Osaka after the opening set before the Japanese star decided to retire due to injury. Muchova reached the final of the Stuttgart Open in April but lost the title to Elena Rybakina in straight sets.

Karolina Muchova praises Linda Noskova for her unpredictable display at Wimbledon final

When Karolina Muchova came from 2-5 to win the second set 7-5, Linda Noskova was shell-shocked as she took an off-court break. It was a defining moment of the encounter as it seemed that the momentum had swung in Muchova’s favor. But the ninth seed settled down quicker in the third set, breaking early and going three games to love up.

The 21-year-old maintained the form, gliding on the grass and forcing Muchova deep into her baseline with a range of aggressive winners. Noskova completed the job on her sixth match point, winning her first Grand Slam. Muchova praised Noskova during the aforementioned press conference, stressing that the youngster is one of the most unpredictable players in the women’s circuit:

Linda is a very unpredictable player; today, she served exceptionally well, and I found it very difficult to read her service. She was very brave throughout the match, constantly taking risks, and it paid off. Besides, she fights for every point and competes with great intensity; she is a very tough opponent on any surface.

Noskova first made a name for herself on tour after reaching the quarter-finals of the 2024 Australian Open. She claimed the Berlin Tennis Open last month after beating Jessica Pegula in the final. The 21-year-old is set to solidify her place in the WTA top 10 and will seek to play at the year-end WTA Finals in November.
