Linda Noskova was moments away from a comfortable straight-sets victory in the Wimbledon final. She had a championship point on her opponent Karolina Muchova‘s serve while leading 5-2 in the second set and while serving for the match in the next game. She also had a championship point at 5-4.

Noskova’s serve was not broken throughout the match except for when she served for the match in the second set. She double-faulted at championship point and was finally broken on her seventh break point. Muchova bravely saved five championship points to level the score 5-5 and soon went on to force a deciding set after an inside-in forehand winner.

Noskova plugged her fingers into her ears before walking off the court to block out the roar of the crowd. She also sat with a towel wrapped around her head. However, what followed after the end of this set was a masterclass in resilience.

In the decider, Noskova fought her demons and started off strong, building a 3-0 lead. Later, while serving for the match, she hit an ace to seal the win 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 and clinch her maiden Grand Slam title at the age of 21.

Tennis truly is a game of mental strength. Before facing the immense pressure of closing out her maiden Grand Slam title, Noskova had already experienced the other side of the coin. In the third round, she came within a point of elimination against 17th seed Sorana Cîrstea, facing match point on her own serve while trailing 4-5 in the deciding set. She then let three match points of her own slip away before finally prevailing 11-9 in the final-set tie-break after an epic battle.

Linda Noskova dedicates her Wimbledon victory to her late mother

Linda Noskova is a fighter on and off the court. After her incredible Wimbledon win, the Czech tennis star dedicated her victory to her late mother, Ivana, who passed away from cancer in 2024:

There’s also one more person I would like to thank, which is my mom. I definitely would not be standing here without her, so thank you.

This championship marked the first all-Czech women’s Grand Slam final, a testimony to the greatness of Czech tennis in recent years. Three of the last four Wimbledon women’s titles have been won by a Czech tennis player.

In 2023, Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win the title. In 2024, Barbora Krejcikova won her second Grand Slam at Wimbledon. Two other women representing Czechia have won the Wimbledon title in the Open Era, Jana Novotna and Petra Kvitova.

An incredible season for Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova

This triumph marks Linda Noskova’s third singles title and her second on grass, following her victory at the Berlin Tennis Championships last month. For Karolina Muchova, this final was another heartbreaking loss. Muchova had previously reached the Roland Garros final in 2023, where she lost to defending champion Iga Swiatek in a close three-set battle.

However, Muchova has much to be proud of this season. The 29-year-old won two titles this season, including her first WTA 1000 title, ending a six-year title drought. Both players will also be at a career-high WTA ranking after this run. Muchova now sits at World No. 6, while Noskova has surged to World No. 7.
