Victor Wembanyama might be one step closer to the finish line, but he and his San Antonio Spurs have to go through the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
The latter have reached the biggest stage of all after sweeping teams in back-to-back series. That means that not only have they had more rest, but their form is better than that of the Spurs.
The San Antonio-based team had to battle the defending-champion Oklahoma City Thunder and managed to eclipse them in seven games.
After that monumental victory, the Frenchman was visibly emotional, allowing the onlooking fans and media to see just how much it meant for him to reach the Finals.
He’s crying in the Western Conference Finals. That was too emotional for me… He’s got four more games to try to get it. You’ve got to go through the Finals now. Nah, you’ve got to be even-keeled right here.
Kevin Garnett said on KG Certified
This was Kevin Garnett taking offense to how Wembanyama cried after winning the West Finals. He believes the center should keep that emotion for the NBA Finals, as that is the ultimate goal.

This outpouring of emotion led the Hall of Famer to believe that the 22-year-old was more concerned with defeating the Thunder. But that is not the endgame, and Garnett wants the Spurs superstar to use that motivation against the Knicks.
Fans tear into Kevin Garnett for uncalled-for Victor Wembanyama criticism
The problem basketball fans had with this latest rant from the former NBA champion was that athletes have the right to express their emotions however they want.
They felt it was not for Kevin Garnett to decide what Victor Wembanyama should feel after defeating the reigning champions in their home. Fans felt that the Timberwolves’ legend was being disrespectful. They took to social media to tear into him; examples are below.
KG woulda cried too if he ever got the Wolves to Finals. He's outta line here. Vic's def locked in.

He has the right to be too emotional for beating SGA and the Refs… and making his first finals appearance in his first postseason run

Please don’t tell other people how they should feel.

Easier said by a guy who didn’t see that success earlier in his career 🤣

It was more than the WCF. He had a vendetta against Chet and he felt he got slighted for the MVP. Also remember this dude is still super young with the weight of the basketball world on his soldiers.

3rd season at 22 years old and made it to the finals, he can be emotional as he wants

Victor Wembanyama may need the right motivation to take on the New York Knicks. Kevin Garnett did have a point: the well-rested East champions will have the advantage.
Victor Wembanyama and his Spurs will have a task facing the Knicks
With less than 24 hours remaining for the first game of the 2026 NBA Finals, Victor Wembanyama and his San Antonio Spurs will have to get back into game shape when the ball tips off.

Their opponents, the New York Knicks, will be fresh, whereas the Spurs are coming off a grueling seven-game series. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst believes those contrasting records make it harder for the West champions.
On the latest edition of NBA Today, the longtime analyst pointed out that teams coming off a sweep have a 20-4 series record in the NBA playoffs against teams coming off a Game seven.

Windy made it clear that this series would be decided more by fatigue than by talent. That means it is up to Victor Wembanyama and his teammates to manage their energy levels when facing the Knicks.
