In Short
  • Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out of IPL 2026 due to a serious quadriceps injury sustained during a match against KKR.
  • The injury will require more than 12 weeks for recovery, potentially needing surgery.
  • CSK is exploring replacement options, including signing Australian pacer Spencer Johnson as an injury replacement.

Just as things began to take shape in the Chennai Super Kings camp, the team has been dealt a massive blow. Ace pacer Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to an injury he sustained during their clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Khaleel Ahmed was CSK’s go-to bowler last summer, after he was acquired by the five-time IPL-winning franchise for INR 4.8 crores. In what was a rather disappointing 2025 IPL season for Chennai, Ahmed was among the bright spots, as he picked up 15 wickets in 14 matches at a decent average of 29.80. The fast bowler, who hails from Rajasthan, was, as a result, among the players retained ahead of the 2026 season.

Ahmed, however, did not have the best of starts to IPL 2026, as he went wicketless in CSK’s three opening games. Against DC, he picked up his first wicket of the season, while helping the Men in Yellow defend a 212-run target to secure their first win of the campaign. The left-arm bowler returned to his best in the following game against KKR, where he finished with figures of 1/24 and scalped Sunil Narine‘s wicket.

The 28-year-old, however, hit an unexpected setback while bowling the final over of his spell against KKR. While running to deliver the final ball of the 17th over, Ahmed felt discomfort in his right leg and was forced to halt midway.

After examination by medics, it became certain that he would not be able to complete his spell and subsequently limped off the ground with a pained expression. Gurjapneet Singh finished the over, conceding a boundary on the final ball.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old underwent scans at the end of the team’s victory, with the results confirming that he would be ruled out for the remainder of the season. He has suffered a serious quadriceps injury that will require a lengthy layoff.

A statement from Chennai Super Kings indicated the fast bowler will require more than 12 weeks to fully recover, with subsequent reports detailing the injury as a Grade-2 partial tear of his right rectus femoris tendon muscle, which might even require surgery.

Ahmed’s absence now leaves CSK without its primary fast bowler, and he becomes the second player, after Australian Nathan Ellis, to be ruled out with an injury. Moreover, it comes at a time when Chennai will be looking to win its upcoming matches to remain in the playoffs race.

Four candidates who could replace injured Khaleel Ahmed in CSK

Chennai Super Kings’ IPL season seems to have taken a hit, with Khaleel Ahmed ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 campaign due to a muscle injury. In his absence, the franchise is expected to seek a replacement for the experienced left-arm pacer.

The timing of Ahmed’s injury could not be worse for Chennai, as they aim to come out of the bottom half of the 2026 IPL table. CSK have three pacers waiting in the ranks, who could replace Ahmed right away. Ramakrishna Ghosh is one of them, who is known for consistently bowling at speeds well above 140kph. He is joined by pacers Mukesh Choudhary and New Zealand’s Zakary Foulkes in the squad as well.

Coming to outside options, Chetan Sakariya could be a like-for-like replacement. While he went unsold at the 2026 IPL auction, Sakariya was impressive during the 2025 SMAT, having picked up 12 wickets in seven matches. Akash Madhwal is another proven contender, boasting strong IPL record with 23 wickets across 17 innings. Additionally, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Simarjeet Singh could also be considered.

Meanwhile, Australian left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson has been signed by CSK as an injury replacement, which is expected to provide a substantial boost to the team. However, he will only join the squad later, around April 21-23, as he is currently recovering from a back injury.
