It looks like Khamzat Chimaev will soon be returning to the octagon. The Swede who had an unbelievable 2020 after going 3-0 up in no time, saw himself at crossroads as COVID-19 got the better of him. He was hit with the dreadful disease when he was scheduled to face top-ranked welterweight Leon Edwards. Just when people thought, he would recover like every other athlete, he announced his retirement due to the serious lasting effects of the disease and also because of the toll it took on his lungs.
However, now he has almost recovered, back from retirement, and a few weeks ago announced that he will be competing in 2021. More recently, Dominance MMA CEO and Khamzat Chimaev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz provided an update on when Khamzat will be returning to the octagon. He further revealed that Khamzat is definitely a superstar in the making.

Ali Abdelaziz was quoted as saying, “You see Alexander (Volkanovski), the (UFC) featherweight champion. I hope he’s OK. He had some problems with it. Khamzat had some problems with it. Now he’s 100 percent healthy. He’s back training this week or last week.” [via BloodyElbow]
He then said, “We’ll see him at the end of July (or) August. Even Dana (White) was asking me the other day. I told him the end of July or August he’ll fight. I told Sean (Shelby), too.” [via BloodyElbow]
And finally, Abdelaziz said, “Realistically, I think it’s time to slow it down a little bit, but I think he’s going to make a (bigger) statement on the comeback. He’s going to keep climbing. He’s a special talent. He’s a superstar, I believe, in the making. All of us will see.” [via BloodyElbow]
Khamzat Chimaev last fought Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Fight Night : Woodley vs Covington in September. He knocked out the grappling artist with a devastating punch. Given that it has already been 7 months since that fight, ring rust will play a huge role in his comeback fight. However, fight fans will be glad that ‘The Borz’ is well and truly back!
