LeBron James‘ impact on the game of basketball is probably a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. The incredible athleticism and scoring ability have resulted in the star having some unreal records to his name. James’ achievements are so far ahead of the expectations as they are now leading other players to undermine their own. Klay Thompson recently compared his career points to the all-time leader.

In the absence of both Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson stepped up in the matchup against the Denver Nuggets. Despite the loss, Thompson scored 25 points but more importantly, he registered his name in NBA history. The sharpshooter has successfully passed the mark of 16,000 career points. Thompson is now part of another group of stars, but the Mavericks forward was not impressed.

Instead, Thompson compared his feat to LeBron James‘ 40,000 points in the press conference. “It’s cool, but it makes you realize how ridiculous it is that LeBron has 40,000. Ridiculous. That’s insane,” Klay Thompson said.

The loss may have been the reason for Thompson’s apathy, but the statement was certainly understandable. James passing the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was an accomplishment on its own but 40k points is close to unimaginable. Despite Thompson’s achievement being unique, it does seem ordinary compared to James’.

The compliment is also huge considering James and Thompson’s history. The duo has been a part of one of the biggest rivalries in NBA history. However, James’ greatness has led Thompson to keep the differences aside. The Mavericks star is the 125th player to score 16k points which is still far behind of James and his ongoing record.

LeBron James wanted to team up with Klay Thompson

It seems that Thompson was not the only one ready to keep the differences aside. In the 2024 offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers made many changes to improve their roster including hiring JJ Redick. Hence, it was clear that the team was willing to make some tough decisions. But the Lakers’ leading man was also revealed to be taking responsibility for the betterment of the team.

Thompson and the Golden State Warriors had a falling out last season, which led to the star entering free agency. James reportedly jumped on the opportunity right away and contacted Thompson. That is not all, as ESPN’s reporter Dave McMenamin also disclosed that the four-time champion was even ready to take a pay cut to add a veteran player such as Thompson.

Unfortunately, James failed to convince Thompson as ‘captain Klay’ decided to choose Dallas. But it is important to note that Thompson was actually interested in playing alongside James but believed that Mavs were a better fit for him. Regardless of the team, Thompson yet seems to have respect for James considering his statement.
