The NASCAR community has started the conversation around the Next-Gen cars short track racing woes yet again after the disappointing race product from last weeks’ Bristol playoff race. There were huge expectation following the impressive regular season race, but with just eight lead changes and winner Kyle Larson leading 462 laps, the race just shattered the hopes.

The 2021 Cup champion, Kyle Larson, has been very vocal about the race product after his win and has even come out defending the sport from criticism from the fans. In the Dale Jr. Download Reloaded podcast, he highlighted that how it is easy for individuals who aren’t the team owners to comment on the topic and urges for changes, which isn’t always the sustainable option.

I don’t know because, well for one, I’m not a car owner so I don’t deal with … I think it’s easy for us to sit here and say, ‘Well the tires might not be the biggest thing that’s going to change the racing so we need to start changing stuff on the cars, taking aero away, hiding aero or doing this or doing that.’

He even pointed out that the team owner has already enduring a lot of cost because of the new car and they don’t want to change it, as it will financially drain them more. This will defeat the purpose of the introduction Next-Gen cars, which was to reduce the cost of teams to race in the premier stock car division.

I think that the team owners don’t want to change the cars because it’s going to cost them a lot of money so I don’t know I think it’s just a tricky situation right now.

I think I said that because I’ve been a part of some not so exciting races where somebody might lead a lot of laps, not a lot of passing and then we get a caution at the end and we have one or two overtime finishes and then I look at the poll the next day and it’s like, ‘The best race of the year.’ That’s where I was coming at from Bristol…

The points made by the future Hall of Famer is on the mark, as it was a race similar to many of other short track events this season, with just limited number of incidents. He seems clearly disappointed by the fact that clean and dominant race wins isn’t appreciated enough.
