“Know what you’re getting yourself into!” Kyrie Irving WARNS players signing with Celtics

Kyrie Irving warns players signing with the Boston Celtics to embrace Celtics culture

Kyrie Irving may have spent only two years with the Boston Celtics. But he sure knows what it is like to be a part of, or more importantly, the leading superstar of one of the most storied franchises in the NBA. After knowing the perils of playing for them, the now Dallas Mavericks superstar shared his words of wisdom in the form of a warning before Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

During the pre-game interviews, a reporter from NBC Sports Boston asked Irving about what it is to come to Boston and be a part of the Celtics. Considering how his time went, the former NBA Champion gave an honest reply.

You just expect to have a magnifying glass on you everywhere you go. I don't think Boston appreciates being kind of second class to New York. The community is what makes the Celtics great here. If any player is coming here getting drafted, or you're thinking about coming here in free agency or getting traded here, I just think do your homework, and make sure you know what you're getting yourself into.
Kyrie Irving said

The former Celtics star knows what comes with donning the famous green jersey. Having experienced that and lived through it, he wanted to make sure he got the message out to those wanting to go there.

Kyrie Irving knows first-hand that the moment one lands in Boston, the culture will force you to join their side. Even if one has had long-term success with any other franchise, joining the Boston Celtics means one has to embrace their community.

It is evident in when Kristaps Porzingis was given a standing ovation when he was introduced in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. But it was not the same for Kyrie Irving, despite spending more time than Porzingis.

Kyrie Irving was on the outs for not buying into Celtics pride

Kyrie Irving, in comparison to Kristaps Porzingis, did not buy into the pride of the Boston Celtics community. Therefore, he wants players coming in to be ready to buy into that pride.

They expect you to seamlessly buy into the Celtics pride, buy into everything Celtics. And if you don’t, then you’ll be outed. I’m one of the people that’s on the outs. I’m perfectly fine with that, you know what I mean. I did it to myself.

Kyrie Irving added

Irving was clear that he should have done more. He was clear that he should have spoken to former Boston Celtics greats.

Those conversations could have helped him get clarity on what the expectations were. Only then could he have made a different impact. With Dallas Mavericks superstar’s now strained relationship with Celtics fans, Irving knows how it could have been different.

Kyrie Irving might not be able to repair his relationship with them. But it sure, as he has cleared, one has to become a part of the Celtics community to really be a part of the Boston Celtics.
