LeBron James chose the Philadelphia 76ers as the final destination of his illustrious NBA career. After calling time on his eight-year spell with the Los Angeles Lakers, James caught the NBA world by storm as he became an unrestricted free agent for the fourth and final time in his career.
The King has made history wherever he has gone. He has won a championship in every franchise he has played in. He is looking to become the first player in league history to win a title in four different organizations.
His former teammate Iman Shumpert believes that James joined the 76ers to help them win their first championship in 43 years.
Every time he leaves somewhere, the story starts. I feel like Bron likes a challenge; he’s still a kid at heart. There’s a story there. He goes to Philly, they haven’t won in 43 years, he gave somebody that hadn’t seen it in 50, then he went and gave the Lakers and re-crowned them… The challenge lies in Philly now. He couldn’t go to New York because they just won.

Iman Shumpert spent four seasons with James on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Hence, he is quite familiar with the four-time champion’s mentality and how he goes about things.
The 76ers have not made a deep postseason run in a very long time. While it has been over four decades since they won a title, it has been 25 years since they even reached the Eastern Conference Final. James could have joined the New York Knicks as well, but those hopes came to an end after they lifted the championship this year. His legacy is established in Cleveland and Miami; therefore, a move to Philly presented him with a new challenge.
Championship or bust for LeBron James and the 76ers
The expectations surrounding the 76ers are higher than ever. Not only are they expected to make a deep playoff run, many expect them to win it all next year after trading for Jaylen Brown and signing James.

Former four-time champion Shaquille O’Neal did not hesitate to say that the upcoming season is a championship-or-bust for the 76ers.
I want it to work but I don’t think it’s gonna work right away. They gonna win 40, 50 games, but championship or bust. Philly got a squad now. That’s a legendary squad on paper already.

On paper, the 76ers may have the most talented starting five in the league as presently constructed. With Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown, and James, the 76ers will be seen as heavy favorites heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
LeBron James would be called a ring chaser no matter which team he joined
With this current roster, LeBron James has the best chance to win his fifth championship. He may be heading into his 24th season, but as he showed in the playoffs this year, he can still make a difference in the big moments.
Shumpert believes that James would be labeled as a “ring chaser” no matter which franchise he joined.
I read a quote earlier. It was saying ‘It looked like Bron chasing rings’. I’m like ‘No matter where he would have landed, it looked like he was chasing a ring’. That’s how good he is. Even at 41, if he joins the team now, y’all cheating. It was gonna be that either way. I think he just couldn’t go to Golden State because. We all complained when KD went over there and joined Steph. If he would’ve went over there, we’d have complained.

While James will be turning 42 later this year, he can still have a strong impact on the court. Whether he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, or the Golden State Warriors, many would label him as a “ring chaser”. However, at this stage of his career, James emphasized that he is prioritizing his happiness over anything else.
