It was cars and embers flying alike in Hungary as an unfortunate and completely unintended incident took the Hungaroring track by storm, literally sending Max Verstappen flying in the air. Even though there were question marks on who was to be blamed, at the end of it all, both parties featuring Hamilton and Verstappen walked scot-free after the race stewards deemed that no one was to be held culpable for the dramatic collision.
In the post-race interview, Lewis Hamilton opened up at length on what really happened and why it was no one’s fault. But at the end of the interview, a sudden stunt pulled off by Hamilton stunned everyone, not just for his legendary stature or speech but for literally producing a ‘mic-drop’ moment against Max Verstappen.
From what I can remember, I think we passed a back-marker, I got to the braking zone and then Max appeared to overtake the car behind me and I moved out to defend. I left enough room on the inside but Max locked up and he was going on a different trajectory than me. I was going towards around the corner and he came shooting across. It felt like a racing incident and it is easy to make mistakes like that. I don’t feel that it should be any hostility.Lewis Hamilton said at the post-race interview before eventually producing the mic-drop gesture
Despite the thumping crash, Hamilton did finish in the third position grabbing another podium finish alongside the likes of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Verstappen, on the contrary, had his own set of challenges and eventually managed to finish fifth after what seemed like an eventful race in Hungary.
Lewis Hamilton aside, a glance at how the Hungary Grand Prix panned out
The Hungary Grand Prix was choc-a-bloc with one event after the other. Oscar Piastri clinched the race but that came on the back of an intervention from his team, McLaren after they requested Lando Norris, his teammate to hand him the lead.
Piastri had a decent stride in his favour but fell behind momentarily due to a botched pit-stop strategy. There were quite a few calls which had to be made to Norris before he eventually gave in to the order on the 68th lap of the race, allowing Piastri to surge ahead.
The young Aussie sensation grabbed the ace with a time of 1:38:01.989 while Lando Norris reached the finish line two seconds later. Hamilton finished third with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
