Lewis Hamilton’s 1-year deal raises suspicions over reigning champions future
Lewis Hamilton
Mid-way through the 2020 season, it was being presumed that the Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes contract would be signed by the dawn of 2021. But an unexpected delay between the two parties led people to suspect and presume many speculations. It was being expected earlier, that Hamilton would sign a 2-year deal with long-term associates Mercedes. But to everyone’s surprise it wasn’t to be the case.
Lewis Hamilton signed just a 1-year contract extension with Mercedes. No doubts that the Brit Driver will be raring to go for the 8th World Championship in the upcoming season. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff explained they will try to find some time during the season and finish the talks much earlier than this time around.
What after the 2021 season for Lewis Hamilton?
“We agreed jointly that we didn’t want to drag it on as long as we did this time around and we’re trying to find some time together during the season,” said Toto Wolff.
“It’s always tricky to find some time while racing but we have learned the lesson that there could be external factors that can delay discussions and we don’t want to end up in January again, so probably we are going to pick up talking about 2022 much earlier,” Wolff added.
Mercedes is the only team to have both their drivers above the age of 30. However, the Austrian has clarified that, owing to the team’s values of loyalty and integrity, Mercedes will first approach Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas at the end of this season, before going to other potential drivers for the 2022 season.
Having said that, let’s see how the upcoming season pans out for the reigning champion, Lewis Hamilton. As the 2021 season is all set to begin from March 28 in Bahrain.
