Lionel Messi returned to action for Inter Miami after a prolonged ankle injury two weeks ago against Philadelphia Union. The Argentine failed to make a goal contribution in the two games that followed against Atlanta United and NY City. However, the 37-year-old showed his class yet again as he helped Inter Miami salvage a point against Charlotte FC with a stunning strike.
His goal came in the 67th minute of the game, when Miami were trailing by a goal thanks to a deflected shot from Karol Swiderski. Both sides came agonizingly close to scoring before Messi took it upon himself to pull his side level with a bullet shot from outside the box. The ball travelled through a sea of players before finding the net in the bottom left corner.
Messi could’ve even scored a brace, although misplaced shots and awkward contact with the ball saw subsequent attempts go wide of the target. Despite the draw, Miami are still top of the MLS table with 65 points from 31 games.
Miami were lucky to go home with a draw after an offside call chalked off what Charlotte FC thought was the winner.
Fans react to Lionel Messi’s stunning strike against Charlotte FC
After two goalless games for Miami, fans were both relieved and thrilled to see Lionel Messi get his name on the scoresheet once again. The Argentine’s outside-the-box finish attracted praise from all sides on social media. A fan reminded all that he is still the GOAT of long shots and that he’ll continue to do this for Miami for the remainder of the season.
Left in awe, a fan stated that it’s almost always a goal when Messi cuts inside on his left. With 841 career goals, Messi is also the player to have scored the most goals from outside the box. Fans also reacted positively to Messi’s new ‘Iron Man’ celebration after pulling his side level. The veteran striker is very well on his way to securing the second trophy for Inter Miami since joining them a year ago.
While his 841st goal was indeed a thing of beauty, his performance this season has been nothing short of spectacular. In the 19 games he played this season for The Herons, he managed to score 17 and set up another 12. With a 46th career trophy just round the corner, it is undeniable that Messi’s legacy will live on years after his retirement. Reports claim that the player will not extend with Miami and will leave to join boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys in 2025.
