Inter Miami beat Columbus Crew 3-2 on Wednesday night to claim the second trophy in its history. 3-2 read the final score as Lionel Messi helped the side claim the Supporters’ Shield for the very first time. More importantly, fans across the globe celebrated as the No.10 added trophy number 46 to his cabinet, that too with a brace in the title decider.
Messi holds the record for being the player with the most number of team accolades at 46. His 46th trophy came courtesy of a 3-2 win, out of which two goals were scored by the 37-year-old. Messi is followed by Dani Alves at 44 and then Hossam Ashour and Andres Iniesta at 39 and 37 respectively. He has won two trophies with Inter Miami, three with Paris Saint-Germain, 35 with Barcelona and six with the Argentine national team.
Aged 37, it remains to be seen how long the player will continue to impress at the highest level. As of now, he has been recalled to captain the national team after missing out for several games due to an ankle injury suffered in the Copa America final.
Miami are currently top of the League with 68 points in 32 games. His 46 career trophies are testament to his unreal brilliance and strengthens his claim as the greatest of all time.
Fans react as Lionel Messi extends trophy record to 46
Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest footballer of all time. With just Cristiano Ronaldo arguably at par with the Argentine, the latter’s superior trophy cabinet is one of the several arguments fans make use of to prove their point. A fan commented that Messi winning back-to-back titles with one of the ‘worst’ teams in the MLS is easily one of his biggest achievements.
From claiming that he is the greatest in history to no one being close to his level, praise poured in from all sides. Fans spammed pictures of Messi lifting the shield with Jorge Mas in the dressing room as they revelled in the wake of the victory. A fan shared a clip of Messi giving it his all in the 100th minute of the game, nearly setting up Luis Suarez for his second.
While Ronaldo is yet to win a major title with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, Messi is now on his second. Even though the above statement doesn’t attempt to take away Ronaldo’s goal scoring exploits at the club, it is clear that the Argentine has pulled away from the Portuguese beyond return. Messi has scored 17 goals and set up another 10 in 17 games in the MLS this season.
