Bayer Leverkusen picked up their second consecutive win in the Champions League, against Serie A giants AC Milan, garnering reactions from fans. The Xabi Alonso-led club secured a brilliant 1-0 win, making it their fifth win of the new season.

Leverkusen has enjoyed a positive start to the new season, winning three out of the five matches that they have played in the Bundesliga. However, they lost one to RB Leipzig, breaking their long-standing unbeaten streak in the German league. They have scored 14 goals till now this season, while conceding ten, with Florian Wirtz taking the top spot with six goals and an assist in all competitions. Moreover, they have now registered two back-to-back UCL wins, against AC Milan and Feyenoord.

Against the Italian side, Leverkusen secured a narrow 1-0 win over their rivals in a highly-competitive encounter. Despite AC Milan controlling much of the game, the home side held on their lead until full-time. Nigerian forward Victor Boniface struck home a close range effort, after Jeremie Frimpong‘s powerful shot saved by Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, reached him. Xabi Alonso’s side had previously defeated Feyenoord, helped by goals from Wirtz and Alex Grimaldo.

With this win, Leverkusen continued with its brilliant record under Alonso, who helped the side win its first ever Bundesliga title last season. They next face Ligue 1 side Stade Brestois away, who also come off two back-to-back UCL wins, against Sturm Graz and Salzburg.

Fans shared their reactions on social media, with some of them labeling the win against AC Milan as ‘Xabi Alonso magic’. A few others commended the team’s efforts, and also praised Victor Boniface and Jeremie Frimpong’s celebrations after the goal. One fan even compared the two players to pop sensation Michael Jackson. A few Milan fans, however questioned the referee’s decision during the match.

Meanwhile, AC Milan have suffered a major setback in their route to Champions League glory this season, losing their opening two UCL league stage matches. Apart from Leverkusen, they had also suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, two weeks ago.
