Logan Gilbert stole the show on Wednesday. During the game between the Seattle Mariners and the Athletics at T-Mobile Park, the pitcher was involved in a bizarre moment that sparked several debates on social media.
The 28-year-old was making his 6th start of the year. After giving up a walk to Nick Kurtz to start the game, he conceded a single to Shea Langeliers. This brought up Carlos Corton to the plate.
The hitter was able to work a 2-1 count against Gilbert. On the 13th pitch of the inning, the Athletics star hit a line drive right back at the pitcher. It was at this moment that a bizarre incident took place.
The ball screamed right back at Gilbert. It then quite literally made its way into the pitcher’s jersey and got lodged between two buttons.
For a moment, the Mariners’ star had no idea where the ball was. After turning around in circles, he realized that it was stuck in his jersey. He would then remove the ball from his uniform and appeal for an out, claiming that he caught the ball.
The umpires immediately called time to stop the play. They later ruled it as a single and allowed Cortes to advance to first base, while crediting him with a single.

A 107.8 mph line drive slammed straight into his jersey and got completely lodged there.
It took him a few seconds to figure out where the ball even went.

Langaliers, however, was placed at second, while Kurtz, the runner on third, stayed put. This was due to the “umpire’s judgment” call.
As per the official MLB rules, a player must catch the ball with his glove or the bare hand, provided the player does not use their cap, protector, pocket, or any other part of their uniform to get possession. In this case, Gilbert’s uniform helped him gain possession of the ball. That’s why it was not ruled as an out.

The pitcher was checked by the Mariners’ trainers before remaining in the game. He proceeded to give up a sacrifice fly to Tyler Soderstrom and a two-out single to Jeff McNeil, which saw the A’s take a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Gilbert went on to pitch 4 innings and give up 3 runs through 6 hits. The Mariners eventually walked off the division-leading A’s in the 9th inning through a single from Josh Naylor to win 5-4 and improve their record to 11-15 for the season.
Logan Gilbert admits he was in a bit of pain after ‘catching’ the ball in his jersey
Logan Gilbert found himself in highlight reels after ‘catching‘ the ball with his jersey in the first inning of the game. Following the game, the Seattle Mariners‘ star admitted that he was in a bit of pain after the incident.

The ball was clocked to have come off at 107.8 mph off the bat. In a reflex action, the pitcher tried to avoid getting hit by the pitch.
In this action, the ball got caught in his jersey and was struck between his buttons. Things could have been way worse if the ball had been a bit higher. It could have struck him in the face, leading to a major injury.

Absolutely bizarre play, and Gilbert is then checked out by Mariners head athletic trainer Kyle Torgerson. But he'll remain in this game.

While speaking with the reporters, the 2024 All-Star expressed that everything happened in a blur.
It was just a blur. I mean, I thought it was coming from my face for a second. So all things considered, it could have been worse. It didn’t really get a bone or anything, so just a little bit of pain.
Logan Gilbert said as per Daniel Kramer
According to reports from MLB.com, the pitcher was bruised on his stomach. He also suffered a cut on the palm of his pitching hand. However, he was not sure whether this was due to the linebacker.
A similar incident once took place in 2017. During a game between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals, the ball got stuck in the protective gear of catcher Yadier Molina. He kept on looking for the ball until realizing that it was stuck on his torso.
