Luka Doncic ‘doesn’t make any sense’, claims Klay Thompson after record-breaking debut

Luka Doncic and Klay Thompson

The Dallas Mavericks signed NBA legend Klay Thompson during the 2024 NBA Free Agency. Since then, the four-time NBA champion has been enjoying life with the Mavs. In the Mavs’ season-opening win against the San Antonio Spurs, Thompson and his teammate Luka Doncic stood out at the American Airlines Center.

In Thompson’s debut game for his new side on Thursday night, he was impressed by Doncic’s performance. The Slovenian dropped a whopping 28 points on the Spurs, garnering immense praise from Thompson after the game.

Incredible talent. It doesn’t make any sense… What we’re taught growing up, as far as being the best basketball player, is you got to jump the highest, you got to run the fastest, but somehow Luka defies that and plays at his own speed.

Klay Thompson said in the post-match press conference

Thompson also created a piece of history for the Mavs. In his first game with Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Thompson scored 22 points and established a franchise record with six 3-pointers in the Mavericks’ 120-109 victory.

He has provided the Mavs fans with a lot of hope about achieving something great this season. With Thompson’s addition alongside Doncic and Irving, the Mavs will be looking to claim the NBA 2025 title after losing the Finals in the previous season.

Luka Doncic is ‘glad’ that Mavs signed Klay Thompson

Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have started their season with a win over the San Antonio Spurs. While the offense took care of the result, the Mavs’ defense performed admirably too.

Interestingly, Klay Thompson quickly settled into his rhythm during his Mavericks debut. Doncic praised the American’s performance on his debut and stated that he was glad the team signed him.

It was great, man. Just knocking down a lot of shots. He was moving out there, he was playing great defense, too. I’m just glad we got him… I mean, it’s easy to play with a guy like that. It makes your life easier. You got to find him.

Luka Doncic told the reporters

That said, Doncic did not perform as per his high standards. Despite his lackluster performance, however, he led the Mavs in scoring (28 points) and also contributed one steal, eight assists, and ten rebounds.

However, one thing that was certain after the Mavs’ win was that Doncic likes playing with his new teammate Thompson, and vice versa. All eyes will now be on the Mavs’ trio going forward.
