The Dallas Mavericks beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6, and advanced to the Western Conference Finals. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were asked about the ESPN grade of “D” for the Irving trade that brought him to Dallas. Doncic was shocked by the grade, but they both laughed it off, saying they didn’t care about outside opinions.

The trade was seen as a risk due to Irving’s reputation, but since joining he’s been phenomenal for the Mavericks. He’s provided veteran leadership and a superstar presence alongside Luka Doncic.

Kyrie Irving said during the press conference
I don’t think we care. We enjoy playing with each other and this team. We don’t really care what other people have to say.

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving shared a nice moment after guiding the Mavericks to the Western Conference finals

Kyrie Irving’s trade to the Dallas Mavericks in 2023, raised a lot of questions about his partnership with Luka Doncic. However, their synergy on the court and genuine friendship off the court has answered those questions as the two stars have built a strong relationship, as Doncic said Irving has been supportive and helped him mature as a player and person.

[Irving's] nothing but supportive of everything I did. Just helped me mature a lot, realize to see the game in a different way, and obviously on the court it’s amazing to play with a guy like him…The leader he’s been for us, not just for me but for us, he’s been amazing, always positive energy.
Luka Doncic said at the post-game press conference:

Furthermore, Irving reciprocated the praise, as he also asserted that Doncic has pushed him in multiple ways and that he enjoys watching him develop as a person and player. Irving also joked about Doncic being a “big teddy bear” who likes to compete.

The Mavericks’ success on the court is a result of their strong partnership, and they’re now headed to the Western Conference Finals. As they await the winner of the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves series, it’s clear that Doncic and Irving’s relationship is a key factor in their success.
