Magomed Ankalaev recently shocked the world by beating Alex Pereira at UFC 313, and winning the light heavyweight championship. The Russian is the second in the UFC to beat the ‘Poatan’ and his confidence is at an all time high. As a result, he has also started a beef with the heavyweight champion Jon Jones on the internet.

Jones originally planned to fight Pereira in a superfight, and earn millions of dollars before his retirement. In order to achieve that, he was ignoring the much anticipated heavyweight title unification bout against Tom Aspinall. In a recent tweet, Ankalaev reminded ‘Bones’ of his responsibility as the champion in a mocking tone.

Jonny steroid machine was very disappointed. I beat Alex please fight big Tom @AspinallMMA stop running

Ankalaev has been vocal about Jon Jones’ history with PEDs, which remains a major stain on his legacy. The UFC veteran has tested positive for banned substances twice, fueling ongoing debates about his greatness. While many still consider Jones the GOAT, others see his failed tests as a lasting mark against his career.

Regardless, Ankalaev is now responsible for ruining Jones’ ultimate retirement. Pereira would most probably fight the Russian for an immediate title rematch.  Now, the heavyweight champion is left with only one option and that is to fight Tom Aspinall.

Tom Aspinall calls out Jon Jones to sign the contract

Tom Aspinall has struggled to secure a fight with Jon Jones, despite holding the interim heavyweight title. Jones initially was focused on his showdown with Stipe Miocic. After that fight, instead of fighting Aspinall he has avoided it. Aspinall has done everything in his power to call for the bout. However, UFC politics and Jones’ priorities have kept the fight out of reach.

Recently, Aspinall suggested that the UFC and he are ready for the fight but the delay is on Jones’ side. As expected, he was looking forward to the Magomed Ankalaev vs. Alex Pereira fight as it had the ability to change his situation. Now, following UFC 313, Aspinall has found himself in a good position and sent a direct message to Jones.

That’s off the table now, the Alex Pereira fight at heavyweight. I mean he(Jones) could still fight at light heavyweight but it won’t be for a title. Jon? There’s only one thing to do mate. Sign the contract and let’s get a date going.

Aspinall is one of the most popular fighters in the UFC due to his fighting style and personality. The British fighter likes to knockout his opponents as soon as possible when the octagon is closed. Many fans believe that UFC is wasting the Brit’s prime years waiting for Jones

Jon Jones’ perfect retirement plan

Jon Jones is a two-time UFC light heavyweight champion and the current heavyweight champion. He holds records for most title defenses (light heavyweight), youngest UFC champion, and longest unbeaten streak. With wins over legends like Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson etc, Jones is widely regarded as one of MMA’s greatest fighters.

The fighter has given more than 10 years to this company and wants to retire as soon as possible. Unlike fighters who struggle to get out when necessary, Jones is well aware of the dangers of fighting. ‘Bones’ wants to live the next part of his life making money off his fame and not putting his health at risk.

Jones is inspired by the likes of Dwayne Johnson and has already taken his first step towards acting. Fighting Tom Aspinall is a big risk that could potentially hamper his legacy and he understands this. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see how UFC deals with the situation in 2025.
