Brian Daboll signed Russell Wilson to sort out the quarterback conundrum and help star wide receiver Malik Nabers reach new heights at the New York Giants. However, their first official game together was a big disappointment.

The Giants faced the Washington Commanders in week one, aiming to sneak in a victory. However, throughout the first three quarters of the game, the G-Men played catch-up to their divisional rivals.

An aging Russell Wilson looked slow in the pocket and threw several incompletions. He completed just 12 passes for 105 yards and zero touchdowns, took sacks, and fumbled the ball once (recovered moments later by the veteran).

Malik Nabers was agitated as he wasn’t getting much service from his quarterback. Video emerged of a frustrated Nabers in the Giants’ dugout after hauling in just 5 catches from 10 targets.

This wasn’t the only occasion cameras caught Nabers acting up on the sidelines. He argued with head coach Brian Daboll. To make matters worse, he did not reciprocate when Daboll extended a token handshake to end the debate.

It was an awkward moment, but Daboll handled his second-year stud with a tight hug before sending him back onto the field.

Nabers finished the game with 5 receptions for 71 yards, while Wilson’s final scorecard showed 17 completions for 168 yards. The fixture ended with a 21-6 win for the Commanders.

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, who shared the locker room with Nabers at LSU, threw for 233 yards on 19 completions for 1 touchdown, along with 11 carries for 68 yards. Rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt racked up 10 rushes for 82 yards and one score. Commanders debutant Deebo Samuel notched 7 receptions for 77 yards, along with 19 rushing yards and one score on the ground.

Malik Nabers nearly missed the Commanders fixture due to an injury

There was genuine concern surrounding Nabers’ availability for the season’s opener in Washington. He was a spectator for a large part of the training camp due to a variety of injuries.

Daboll assured everyone that Nabers was healthy enough to play in the game. However, Nabers’ absence from Friday’s practice raised ample question marks about his condition.

The Giants faithful breathed a sigh of relief after the front office released the final injury report, which did not contain Nabers’ name. It meant he had the green signal to start the game.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the 2024 sixth overall pick suffered from back tightness.

Giants WR Malik Nabers, who missed practice Friday because of back tightness, has no game status and is expected to play Sunday vs. Washington.

Nabers had been dealing with a nagging foot injury all year. Earlier in the week, he said that the toe felt good.

It’s been a little ride, but right now I feel great… When it’s game time and those lights are on, I believe my body is gonna turn it on. We gonna be ready to roll.

Malik Nabers said (H/T: CBS Sports)

Nabers was clutch during his rookie season in the Big Apple. He racked up 109 receptions for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 appearances.

Week one may have ended in disappointment, but there are still 16 games left in the season. Up next, the Giants make a trip to Arlington to face the Dallas Cowboys, who lost their first game to the Philadelphia Eagles.
