Mamadou Sakho bids farewell to Crystal Palace after expiry of his contract to join Montpellier HSC
Mamadou Sakho has departed Premier League club Crystal Palace upon the expiry of his contract after four and a half years, to sign for Ligue 1 side Montpellier Hérault SC.
Sakho had joined Crystal Palace on loan from league rivals Liverpool back in January 2017, and notched up Palace’s Player of the Month award in March, as he helped them to secure safety from relegation battle with several crucial clean sheets. That year, he signed a permanent deal with the club in August 2017 and went on to play a total of 75 times for the Eagles.
French International Mamadou Sakho returns to Ligue 1 as he signs for Montpellier HSC

The 31 year old French international will be returning to Ligue 1, joining Montpellier Hérault SC and will be seen wearing the no 3 jersey. Montpellier was on the lookout for an experienced defender to add to their ranks, and Sakho would be a perfect fit for the role.
Mamadou Sakho was born in Paris and joined the PSG academy at the age of 12, and made his senior professional debut for the club on his 17th birthday in a round of 16 UEFA Cup match against AEK Athens. Sakho became the youngest club captain in history at only the age of 17 years and 8 months, in a match against Valenciennes.
Sakho showed an impressive physical ability and maturity at a very young age, and became one of the emblems for PSG as he garnered 201 appearances and 7 goals for the French giants. Following that, Sakho confirmed a transfer to Premier League where he spent 8 seasons, with both Liverpool and then Crystal Palace.
“I am very happy to come back to France with a great project such as the one in Montpellier. We discussed a lot with the leaders, the project is brilliant and won me over with a lot of young people and good players,” said Sakho in his official statement on joining Montpellier HSC.
“Happy to finally have him with us, he will be able to train this afternoon with the aim of being operational as soon as possible.” stated President Laurent Nicollin who was delighted to welcome a player of such magnitude.
“He will bring us his experience, his desire and panache. I hope he will be one of those leaders who will be able to mentor our young people to help them progress.” added Nicollin.

Sakho will be joining Montpellier in a free transfer after his contract ended with Crystal Palace this summer.
