Qualifier Marco Trungelliti lost his cool while clashing with fellow qualifier Daniel Merida Aguilar in the first round of the Madrid Open, held on Thursday (April 23). Trungelliti suffered a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6) defeat.

During the match, a group of spectators was continuously disturbing him, even after Trungelliti complained to the umpire. When Trungelliti had had enough, he walked toward the stand and gave the hecklers a cold stare before he yelled at them to come down.

Here’s the video of the incident:

After the match, Trungelliti took to Instagram story and explained the reason behind his conduct.

Trungelliti qualified for a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time. Prior to this event, he had played the qualifying round at the Masters 1000s eight times.

Trungelliti went past Borna Gojo and lost to Aguilar before he secured a berth in the main draw. Before playing in Madrid, Trungelliti was defeated in the round of 32 of the Barcelona Open by Hamad Medjedovic.

Trungelliti has never won a tour-level singles title. But he has played one final. In this year’s Grand Prix Hassan II (an ATP 250 clay-court tournament), Trungelliti lost to rising Spanish ace Rafael Jodar.

Trungelliti, however, has lifted the Kigali Challenger by defeating Marco Cecchinato. In Grand Slam events, Trungelliti has yet to feature in a main draw event since the 2022 Australian Open.

Daniel Merida Aguilar will lock horns with Corentin Moutet next

Daniel Merida Aguilar’s second-round opponent is Corentin Moutet. Because he is seeded 26th, he will kick-start his campaign in the tournament against Aguilar. Before scheduling his match against Moutet, Aguilar beat Billy Harris before his victory over Marco Trungelliti in the qualifying round.

Moutet, who lost in the opening round in the previous three Madrid Opens, has progressed to the second round for the first time. The Frenchman has so far reached just one fourth round in a Masters 1000 event, and that was last year’s Italian Open. Jack Draper eliminated him.

If Moutet wins, he will be locking horns with Alexander Bublik or Stefanos Tsitsipas. Bublik has already won a title this season. He lifted the ATP 250 title at the Hong Kong Open by beating Lorenzo Musetti. Last year, he featured in four finals, including at the ATP 500 Halle Open, winning all.

But at the Madrid Open, Bublik will be hoping to reach the third round. He made the second round in 2021. Against Moutet, Tsitsipas holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead. Tsitsipas has yet to win a title since the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships, where he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime. He is trying to rediscover his form and will be hoping to make it to the second week.

Tsitsipas has made just one quarterfinal this year, at the Qatar Open, and lost that match to Andrey Rublev. In his opening-round match, the Greek ace battled past Patrick Kypson. It was his first win after two opening-round exits at the Monte-Carlo Masters and the Munich Open.

The former World No.3 now stands on the 80th spot. He is a one-time finalist in Madrid, losing the title clash in 2019 to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

Tsitsipas has so far won three Masters 1000 titles, all at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2021, 2022, and 2024. This year, in the Masters 1000 events, the two-time Grand Slam finalist produced his best performance when he reached the third round of the Miami Open.
