The 2023 season marked the start of a new era for Kyle Busch, as he ended his decade long partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing over sponsorship failures to join Richard Childress Racing. He started his new ventures with three impressive wins, before hitting a performance slump that he is yet to escape from.
Kyle Busch hasn’t won a single race since 2023, while his teammate Austin Dillon grind out two wins and has been contender for wins in just handful of races. Many in the racing community has been debating over who is to blame for the slump, as both the team and racer seems to be off point over the last two years.
Hall of Famer Mark Martin is the most recent figure to share his thoughts on the veteran’s performance. He pointed out that though RCR is really trying to bounce back, but they haven’t reached that point yet. The veteran asserted that the Chevy team is 100% the reason for the lack of success.
It’s not like they’re not trying, but their on-track performance, I’m talking about RCR’s, is not where it needs to be. Number one, that’s the main thing. 100%.
Mark Martin told Charlie Marlow via Mark Martin Archive on YouTube.
Further talking about the point, he asserted that Kyle Busch does have a role to play in the car’s development, but his involvement isn’t as significant as the teams’ efforts. He highlighted how with the right cars he won three races, which proves the team can get back winning ways of the No:8 team become productive again.
It’s what Kyle is driving. Now, Kyle has some influence on what he drives and so he’s a small part of that lack of performance from that stand uh stand point, but he won three races the first year there on sheer driving talent and also their cars were closer to the front.
Mark Martin added.
Mark Martin asserts Kyle Busch is overdriving the No:8 Chevy
In the same conversation, the racing legend pointed out that the poor performance of the cars forcing Kyle Busch to make extreme decisions on the track. He is overdriving his Chevy to get better performances and insisted that that last two years didn’t match the real racing prowess of the two times Cup champion.

So, he’s just so far from the front now that he’s overdrive. He has to overdrive and does overdrive his car when he gets within reach of something and it’s just too much. Kyle’s he’s way better than he showed the last couple of years.
Mark Martin said.
The comments from the HOF seems rational and on point. RCR needs to step up big time with their car development in the 2026 season if they ever want to get back to winning ways. They have the drivers, sponsors and investment to win the title, they now only need the right car.
