24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is struggling big time in the 2024 season and this is the reason American tennis legend Martina Navratilova is unsure of his performance at the 2024 Roland Garros. Navratilova is skeptical about Djokovic lifting the 25th Grand Slam title in Paris by looking at the first few months of the new season.
As Djokovic has not won a title yet this season and has lost to lower-ranked players more often than ever, there are concerns about how he will perform at the second Grand Slam tournament. Navratilova, when asked if Djokovic can get his 25th major title at Roland Garros, said it would be really tough for him as he has not been in the best form this year.
The 67-year-old said that Djokovic has not got the best preparation leading into the Grand Slam tournament which makes him, at least not the frontrunner for the title. She also pointed out that these underwhelming performances from Djokovic have come despite him not being injured.
He can but it is less likely. He would have liked better preparation than what he got which is why he played in Geneva...It has not been a great year for him and he has not been injured. So, we have to wonder whether the motivation is there...Obviously, he will be playing his hardest but ehh, very very underwhelming first four months of the year.Martina Navratilova said it on Tennis Channel.
Novak Djokovic heading into Roland Garros with odds stacked against him
As pointed out by Martina Navratilova, Novak Djokovic is heading into the 2024 Roland Garros with odds stacked against him. The Serbian tennis ace has not been able to live up to his reputation in the 2024 season as he has not been able to win a single title despite playing in five tournaments.
Djokovic could not even win a title at the Geneva Open, an ATP 250 tournament as he lost to Tomas Machac in the semifinal. He has not looked in the best rhythm and has been outplayed on many occasions. For example, in the Australian Open semifinal, Djokovic was completely blown away by Jannik Sinner in four sets.
He then lost to Luca Nardi at Indian Wells followed by a defeat to Casper Ruud in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinal. Alejandro Tabilo got the best out of him in Rome and now Machac beat him in three sets in Geneva. With such below-par performances, Djokovic will face a stern challenge in Paris with all other players high on spirit.
