As much as the New England Patriots wanted to avoid another headline with Matthew Judon’s name, it ended up being exactly that. The outside linebacker, who came to the practice with a list of conditions and did not even participate in the team’s first full-pads practice, eventually walked out of Monday’s (July 29) training camp after sharing a brief conversation with his head coach.
Lately, the four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher seems to be having strained relations with his franchise over his contract, which in his opinion does not reflect his value and that’s why, he has been seeking a more deserving one. Due to this, even when he came to the practice session, he did not fully participate.
On Monday, as he was sitting on a garbage barrel watching his teammates’ full-pads workout, he was approached by head coach Jerod Mayo and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf. After a brief conversation, the cameras spotted Judon walking out of the practice session in an “animated” fashion.
But that’s not all of it. A few moments later, Judon was seen returning and went straight to Wolf and director of player personnel Matt Groh on the sideline, as the Patriots’ player continued with their practice. It appears that the conversation didn’t go well for the star pass rusher and he was seen walking off the field for the second time.
Interestingly, many sources have connected this incident to last week’s practice session when New England owner Robert Kraft was at the practice. He was seen having a long conversation with Judon before having a discussion with Wolf.
Matthew Judon expresses frustration over contract situation with Patriots
Just a week prior, the pass rusher reportedly had full participation in the practice session. However, he decided to sit out on Monday as his contract situation became complicated, making him more frustrated as per the Boston Sports Journal. Judon openly addressed his poor contract situation with the Patriots during his appearance on the “Shut Up Marc” podcast.
I love football. I don't love the business of football. I don't want to be the villain. I don't want to be the bad guy. But it's like 'Shoot, help me out. We got the most cap [space] in the league right now.Matthew Judon said
He revealed that he sent his contract proposal but hasn’t received a response yet. Although it’s unclear when the podcast episode was recorded, Judon expressed his frustration to the media at the camp on July 24, as he is entering the final year of his contract and is set to make $6.4 million in 2024.
