The UFC lightweight division is undoubtedly the most competitive among all other weight classes. It is filled with absolute killers and is currently ruled by the pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev. Top contenders like Charles Oliveira are desperate to get their title shot, but, given the circumstances, the Brazilian has now shifted his focus towards Max Holloway.
After Makhachev’s recent title defense at UFC 311, his manager revealed that Dana White has a different plan for the champion. As it turns out this plan doesn’t involve Charles Oliveira and the former champion has already started looking for different options. In a recent interview, the Brazilian fighter talked about potentially fighting the current BMF title holder Max Holloway.
Holloway, who recently made his permanent move to the lightweight division, accepted the challenge on X. The Hawaiian fighter also suggested the fight to take place on International Fight Week, which is roughly six months away. Similarly, Islam Makhachev has also suggested that he would like to make his octagon return around the same time.

Oliveira recently defeated Michael Chandler and was looking forward to getting a title rematch. However, things have changed significantly. Other than Holloway, the Brazilian also has an opportunity to fight Arman Tsarukyan in a title eliminator. While fans are more excited for that matchup, a fight with Max Holloway also has sparked interest.
Max Holloway defends his position to fight Charles Oliveira
Max Holloway’s 2024 campaign started with his iconic knockout win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. It elevated his superstar status, making him a huge draw ahead of his title fight with Ilia Topuria. However, the fight didn’t go as planned as the Hawaiian superstar got flatlined for the first time in his career.
As mentioned, many fans are more interested in watching Charles Oliveira fighting Arman Tsarukyan in a title eliminator. After the rumors about Holloway vs. Oliveira made headlines, there was some kind of criticism. One fan in particular believed that Holloway did deserve a top-ranked opponent after suffering a knockout loss in his previous fight. The ‘Blessed’ made sure to give a befitting reply on X.

Both Holloway and ‘Do Bronx’ are some of the biggest superstars in the UFC roster with a massive fan following. For the UFC, it won’t be that hard to promote this fight given the amount of potential it contains. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see what is going to be the official announcement regarding this in the future.
