Nobody expected Red Bull to face a big performance slump in 2024. The season started well for the Milton Keynes team, though Sergio Perez struggled regularly and missed out on vital points. After the summer break, Max Verstappen also faced challenges, struggling in qualifying sessions due to persistent car issues.
Verstappen explained that the team had been unsure about the car’s issues for a long time, which made it difficult to improve. However, he believes that they have been heading in the right direction since the race in Monza earlier this month. The Dutchman stressed the need to keep developing the car effectively and making progress in the upcoming races.
For a very long time we didn't know what the big problem was. I think we understand that now, since Monza earlier this month, now it's about developing in the right direction and taking good steps.Max Verstappen told Telegraaf.nl
The Azerbaijan GP saw Verstappen struggle to keep his position and was even overtaken by Lando Norris, who started in P17. The race in Baku gave Red Bull valuable insights about where the car needs to improve.
In Baku, we learned more about what to do with the car. I don't necessarily feel bad either, but it's just not going the way I want for a while.Max Verstappen added
Max Verstappen gives diplomatic response to the question of having an exit clause in his contract
Max Verstappen chose not to provide a clear answer regarding an exit clause in his Red Bull contract. He stated that he isn’t focusing on that right now because he has many factors to consider following his recent struggles.
Verstappen is dealing with issues related to the car’s balance, which has cost him crucial points against his rivals. His underperformance has already affected their lead in the championship. This slump allowed McLaren to take the top spot in the Constructors’ Championship following Oscar Piastri’s victory in Baku.
Maybe yes, maybe no. I don't think about that at the moment, because there are so many things this year that I want to try to understand and do better than the years to come.Max Verstappen told SkySportsF1
Certainly, Max Verstappen aims to focus on the next challenge, seeking to achieve great success in the upcoming races. Fans hope the reigning world champion can bounce back from the recent adversities he’s faced in the sport. With last seven rounds remaining to end the season, there’s still chance for the 26-year-old to retain his driver’s title.
