On Wednesday, New York Mets’ Jefry Yan went viral on social media. The rookie pitcher stole the spotlight during the game against the Cleveland Guardians with a high-flying celebration following his 1st MLB strikeout. Fans on social media, though, were left in splits.

The struggling Mets came into this game on the back of a 6-2 win in the series opener. After they took a 3-0 lead in this game, the Guardians came back to level up the proceedings at 3-3.

In the top of the 6th inning, the visitors retook the lead and entered the bottom frame of this inning leading 4-3. Starting pitcher Christian Scott was then replaced by Yan.

This was the first appearance in the major leagues for the 29-year-old pitcher. 12 years after his professional debut, the left-handed pitcher finally got his chance to showcase his talent on the big stage and made his MLB debut.

His 1st pitch was a 101 mph sinker outside the zone. He then proceeded to work a 1-2 count and struck out pinch-hitter Angel Martinez for his 1st MLB strikeout.

It was obviously a huge moment for him. Following his 1st strikeout, the pitcher showed his flexibility with a high-flying celebration on the mound. Check it out below:

Yan then gave up singles to Patrick Bailey and Angel Genao before surrendering a walk to Steven Kwan. The Guardians, however, failed to capitalize on this as Yan then struck out Chase DeLateur and forced out newly acquired star Jo Adell to end the inning.

He was then replaced by Dedniel Nunez at the start of the bottom half of the 7th inning. In his MLB debut, Yan finished with 2 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.

Martinez, who is a friend of Yan, did not have much issue with this celebration and quietly walked back to the dugout. The fans at Progressive Field, however, were not pleased with this. They made their voices heard by loudly booing him.

While speaking with the reporters through his interpreter, Yan expressed that he did not care what the fans did after his celebration and claimed that he was in his zone.

They can do whatever they want. They’re paying for tickets so if they want to yell at me or if they want to boo me, they can do whatever they want. I’m in my zone.

Jefry Yan told the reporters

This is not the first time Yan has done such celebrations. He has made a name for himself while doing such things in the minor leagues and in Japan.

Speaking of the game, the Guardians did take a 5-4 lead but ended up losing 6-5. The Mets scored in the top of the 9th inning to tie the game at 5-5 and took the lead once again in the 10th inning.

With the loss, the Guardians not only lost the series but also fell below .500 with a 57-58 record. They will hope to avoid getting swept on Thursday.
