- AJ Brown's performance has declined following issues with quarterback Jalen Hurts.
- The Eagles traded for the 23rd overall pick to draft wide receiver Makai Lemon, raising trade rumors about Brown.
- Micah Parsons emphasized that AJ Brown is irreplaceable and criticized the idea of Lemon being a replacement.
AJ Brown joined the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2022 NFL season. A couple of second-team All-Pro, Pro Bowl call-ups, and a Super Bowl winner established Brown as one of the most sought-after wideouts in the NFL.
However, Brown’s numbers have dwindled in the aftermath of a fallout with quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Eagles cannot move on from Hurts, as he is their starter, so the next best option is trading Brown to a different team, which will also reduce the burden on the salary cap. This is where the New England Patriots come in.
Brown grew up supporting the Patriots and Tom Brady. He wanted the Patriots to draft him in 2019, before the Tennessee Titans took him in the second round. In Tennessee, he had the chance to learn from coach Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots player and the current head coach of the Boston-based franchise.
So, it makes sense that Brown would join Vrabel in New England. And the Eagles’ latest move may have pushed the 28-year-old close to leaving Philadelphia for good.
On Thursday, April 23, the Eagles traded with the Dallas Cowboys to acquire the 20th overall pick and selected wide receiver Makai Lemon. This move by the Eagles surprised former Cowboy and current Green Bay Packers pass rusher Micah Parsons. On the “Bleacher Report” draft show, Parsons addressed the Brown trade rumors.
There’s no replacing AJ Brown. I can’t give this [drafting Makai Lemon] an A because it’s a demotion of Brown… The tenacity, the route running, the ability… I don’t care about adversity in the locker room.

Brown wasn’t happy with Hurts’ distribution and the system that Kellen Moore and, later, Kevin Patullo ran back-to-back years. From registering 1400+ yards in his first two years in Philly, Brown barely crossed 1000+ in 2024 and 2025. He has dropped hints about wanting to play for the Patriots since the beginning of last campaign.
Teams reached out to the Eagles with trade offers, but general manager Howie Roseman shut the door on them. Brown’s contract runs until the 2029 season. So the Eagles have no urgency to part ways with him. But with Lemon’s addition, the Eagles may be moving toward trading Brown, which is why Parsons is unhappy.
You don’t let great players walk out [of] the building that easy and say, ‘Oh, this is a replacement.’ That doesn’t work like that. We see that… You don’t replace great players. So to say that, ‘Oh, this guy’s going to be better than Brown,’ I don’t believe that. This is a supplement for Brown.

Lemon’s addition does not guarantee that the Eagles will trade Brown. The Eagles can easily lineup with three receivers, Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Lemon, giving Hurts even more options in the offense.

Despite the chatter about the trade, former Eagles center Jason Kelce believes that Brown is still a respected member of the locker room.
AJ [Brown] has clearly been frustrated and sometimes that frustrates the fans, but one thing I do find unique is that the players really haven’t manifested in a negative way towards AJ, which lends me to think that a lot of people understand AJ’s frustrations.
Jason Kelce said in an interview with Action News
If the Eagles do trade Brown, it will most likely happen after June 1. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Eagles and Patriots have discussed a deal, but neither team seems eager to commit before June 1, when Brown’s $40 million salary cap charge would be split between the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
