‘We lost our grandparents, both of them within a week of each other’ – Michelle Waterson opens up on pulling out from UFC 257
Marina Rodriguez and Michelle Waterson at the faceoffs
Michelle Waterson is just one day away from her main event bout against Marina Rodriguez at UFC Vegas 26. She will be looking forward to notching up a victory and climbing up the women’s strawweight ladder. Her bout was recently made the main event after Cory Sandhagen vs TJ Dillashaw was pulled off.
Now, Waterson was scheduled to face Amanda Ribas at UFC 257. But then, she pulled out due to undisclosed reasons, which she later revealed in an interview with Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions on YouTube, that it was something personal.
And more recently, ‘The Karate Hottie’ opened up on what exactly was the reason she pulled out from the Amanda Ribas fight. She revealed that it was the death of her grandparents in a weeks time, which was the reason for her to withdraw from UFC 257.
‘To be able to grieve properly for them‘ – Michelle Waterson
Speaking in an interview with MMA Fighting, Waterson was quoted as saying, “We lost our grandparents, both of them within a week of each other and it was just really hard for the family. They were really pillars of the family and for us it was important to be there for family. To be able to grieve properly for them. It’s why we decided to not continue with the fight.”
Waterson will be looking forward putting this family tragedy behind and getting back to winning ways. She is coming off a victory against Angela Hill in September 2020.
As for her opponent Rodriguez, she was the one who stepped in as the replacement fighter for Waterson at UFC 257. She earned a TKO victory over fellow Brazilian Amanda Ribas at UFC 257.
