Mike Tomlin ‘unfazed’ by Davante Adams trade as he prepares to face star WR once again in Steelers-Jets showdown: “Don’t imagine that his acquisition changes our approach”

Prior to Davante Adams‘ trade to the New York Jets, there were a couple of other teams who wanted him. Several sources cited the New Orleans Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers as potential destinations for the then-Las Vegas Raiders star.
With now everything done and dusted, he is scheduled to play against Mike Tomlin‘s team this week. Steelers writer Dale Lolley met up with the head coach to ask him a few questions ahead of next week’s game.
When he brought up the topic of Davante Adams and their preparations for him, Tomlin was clear about his approach.
The Steelers HC mentioned that even though the star receiver is going to play with a new team; it is still Aaron Rodgers‘ offense. Something they are always wary about whenever they face him.
Mike Tomlin has faced Aaron Rodgers-led offenses for as long as he has been a head coach. He knows all too well the nuances that come with it. He has also faced that offense when Davante Adams was a part of it with the Green Bay Packers. Now with the New York Jets, it does not change Tomlin’s preparations.
Last week, the Pittsburgh Steelers went into Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, keeping in mind that they might have to face the superstar receiver. This week, they will welcome the New York Jets knowing that he is back into a familiar offense.
Mike Tomlin will have two QBs at his disposal this week
Prior to last week’s game, the talk among NFL folk was about the possibility of the Steelers benching Justin Fields. With Russell Wilson back in full practice, Tomlin was asked about the situation.
Justin Fields‘ performances in prior two losses suggested the Pittsburgh Steelers needed more from the quarterback position. Now with Wilson available, his words suggest they will experiment with the veteran.
The Super Bowl champion has the ability to stretch defenses. Fields has not been able to do that so far consistently. If Russell Wilson can step up and play lights out or even produce decent numbers, the younger QB could learn a thing or two.
Then, when called upon, perform what he learned, and he could be the future franchise QB. But until then, Tomlin would prefer to use the strengths of both his quarterbacks. With Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers coming to town, scoring will be the need of the hour.
